Job Description:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Accounting, Finance, Business or other relevant field of study

Work Experiences:

  • Eight (8) + years of claims-related work experience required
  • Experience leading a team of direct reports is highly desirable

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of casualty insurance, claims investigation, coverage evaluation, litigation management, reserving, insurance legal and regulatory environment, claims processes, applications/systems and procedures, and finance

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day department operations and direct reports to ensure that adequate resources and technical skills exist to facilitate claims adjudication in accordance with Company claim quality and service expectations.
  • Manage the Company's exposure to risk by formulating, developing, and directing casualty claims management strategies, as well as resolving bona fide claims at the least possible cost through various risk transfer techniques.
  • Primary point of contact for casualty claims Third Party Administrator relationship, including contract, pricing, renewals, stewardship, and other strategic discussions/meetings, adherence to Client Service Instructions, and accountability for providing top-level service and outcomes.
  • Actively participate with the Senior Director of Risk Management in conducting RFPs if/as needed.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with Academy's “Concierge Claim Service” protocols to assist injured team members and customers through the claims process and deliver the most optimal outcomes.
  • Manage insured litigated matters (GL, WC, TX Nonsubscriber), including approved counsel panel, oversight of TPA supervisors and adjusters, oversight of counsel, timely budgeting, and participation in mediations, arbitrations, trials, and other hearings. When needed, identify team members to serve as corporate representatives at trial and coordinate deposition preparation and attendance. Ensure that defense strategies are aligned amongst all stakeholders and executed to deliver the most optimal and cost-effective outcome.
  • Understand and operationalize programs, policies, and procedures for incident reporting, investigation, and analysis; litigation management; resolution/outcome management; and the delivery of claim information to stakeholders involved in the claims management process.
  • Manage proper and efficient claim handling by TPA, gather data on claims for both record keeping and loss forecasting purposes, and assure consistent application of sound financial stewardship (timely claim reserves and payments).
  • Build, maintain, and manage relationships with claims adjusters, insurers, outside legal counsel, broker resources, and other claims-related parties. Ensure external reporting requirements are met.
  • Operationalize the design, analysis, and delivery of claim information which influences risk management behavior through performance metrics and benchmarking.
  • Understand and communicate claims management and reserve philosophy and strategy to business units and claims administrator.
  • Participate in short-, medium-, and long-term strategic business planning for claims operations; prepare, recommend, and manage the department's annual budget to ensure appropriate resource allocation and expense levels.
  • Actively develop and engage direct reports to ensure optimal work environment. Focus staff on proactive communication, continuous improvement, looking for ways to build capabilities and drive organizational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Prepare and distribute management reports analyzing and documenting department operations and performance; identify, analyze, and report on claims trends.
  • Review and approve claims TPA recommendations for reserve changes and requests for settlement authority, within assigned authority limits. Appropriately escalates requests that exceed authority limits for approval.
  • Monitor and evaluate the claims reserve practices within the department and claims administrator and ensure that actual reserves are accurate and established promptly.
  • Maintain awareness of existing and proposed legislation, court decisions, and emerging trends in claims litigation. Ensure compliance with statutes and regulations.
  • Manage, review, and process vendor certificates of insurance.
