About the Role:

We are currently seeking three seasoned Business Improvement Specialists to join our Technical Operations team at the Portland Aluminium Smelter, located in the scenic coastal town of Portland, Victoria. These are full-time positions operating on a Monday to Friday roster, ideal for professionals with a strong background in operational excellence and continuous improvement.

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the Portland production system. Your remit will include maintaining and refining the site's operating strategy to ensure alignment with overarching business objectives, as well as driving daily performance improvements and fostering cross-departmental collaboration on key initiatives.

As the ideal candidate you will possess exceptional communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills, enabling you to engage effectively across all levels of the operation. A proven ability to deliver tangible, sustainable improvements will be essential to your success in this role.

Key responsibilities

  • Facilitate the development, coordination, and implementation of business improvement strategies at the departmental level using Alcoa Business System (ABS) methods.
  • Provide expert coaching, advice, and problem-solving support to line and senior management to embed ABS principles across all operational areas.
  • Lead cross-functional technical improvement projects to enhance plant capacity, efficiency, and cost performance.
  • Conduct regular system updates and standard audits, collaborating with department/area managers to assess system health and implement corrective actions.
  • Train and mentor personnel in the practical application of ABS tools, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and team-based problem solving.
  • Act as a strategic partner to department leaders, influencing and guiding the effective deployment of ABS to achieve long-term business objectives.

What you can bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualified or currently studying, with a strong technical foundation aligned to the role.
  • Extensive experience at Alcoa or similar manufacturing environments, particularly in line operations, with deep industry and operational insight.
  • Proven track record of driving performance improvements through key initiatives, backed by strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage change effectively, ensuring smooth transitions and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence across all organisational levels.
  • History of delivering impactful technical improvement projects using continuous improvement methodologies such as Kaizen and Lean.

About the Location

Our Portland Smelter is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia (55%), CITIC (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia (22.5%).
