The Role
We are looking for a passionate, dedicated, and technically strong first-line manager to lead a team of highly skilled Linux kernel engineers developing core CPU and SOC features for AMD EPYC™ processors in the data center. In this role you will guide and direct the technical activities of the team across key kernel subsystems — Memory Management, Scheduler, Power Management — and own the Quality Assurance practices that ensure this work is upstream-ready and production-quality. Your team's scope also includes pre-silicon validation of new AMD hardware, performance optimization, and both internal and customer debug. You will bring an understanding of computer architecture and operating system concepts for the x86-64 architecture, drive feature design and development in the Linux kernel and related open source projects, and help bring new generations of AMD hardware to market. This is a highly collaborative role: you will work closely with remote engineering staff across India, the U.S., and Europe to set direction, remove obstacles, and grow the careers of the engineers you lead.
The PersonAn experienced kernel engineering leader with strong analysis and problem-solving skills, who delivers responsive and efficient solutions that bring new AMD processors to market. You combine technical credibility in Linux kernel development with the people-leadership skills to build, coach, and scale a high-performing team. You engage proven technical collaboration to guide AMD hardware enablement for new-generation CPUs, and you bring excellent written and verbal communication skills to work with local and remote teams, analyze system requirements, and coordinate feature design and development across groups. You thrive in a matrix-managed, fast-paced, quality-driven, and innovative engineering organization, working effectively with peer managers and experienced subject matter experts, and you take ownership of both your team's technical results and its members' growth.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and develop a team of highly skilled Linux kernel engineers, including hiring, coaching, performance management, planning, task prioritization, and communication of status. Drive features and functionality across core kernel subsystems — Memory Management, Scheduler, and Power Management — while owning the Quality Assurance strategy that keeps the team's contributions robust, well-tested, and upstream-ready. Lead pre-silicon validation of new AMD hardware, drive performance optimization of the platform, and resolve internal and customer debug issues. Guide the team through code review, unit and integration test development, and detailed documentation. Work collaboratively with remote engineering staff across India, the U.S., and Europe, partnering effectively with peer managers and experienced subject matter experts, and represent your team's work and priorities across the broader organization.
Preferred Experience- Proven record of technical and team leadership, including people management and collaboration with remote, geographically distributed teams
- Ability to work collaboratively with remote engineering staff across India, the U.S., and Europe
- Ability to work effectively within a matrix-managed organization, partnering with peer managers and experienced subject matter experts
- Solid understanding and experience with the Linux kernel and related upstream development workflow, including one or more of Memory Management, Scheduler, and Power Management subsystems
- Experience defining and driving Quality Assurance practices for kernel or systems software (test development, CI, performance and regression testing)
- Experience with pre-silicon validation and with internal and customer debug
- Experience with performance optimization — running, analyzing, and tuning system performance benchmarks
- Background in C programming for operating system kernel and systems development is useful; hands-on development is not a primary function of this role (experience with Rust is a plus)
- Experience with open source software development — building and submitting patches on a mailing list, and working with external software partners and communities
- Deep understanding of operating systems concepts, data structures, and x86-64 architecture
- Exposure to KVM/QEMU (including x86-64 virtualization extensions) is a plus
- Experience with the GNU toolchain and proficient use of git
- Experience with low-level debug tools, emulators, and simulators
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a matrix-managed, fast-paced, quality-driven, and innovative engineering organization
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another relevant field
