This will be a hybrid position based out of the Banfield Pet Hospital headquarters in Vancouver, WA. This position requires an onsite presence at the Banfield headquarters 3 days/week.

Summary and Qualifications:

The Director of Total Rewards Experience leads a team dedicated to ensuring fair and competitive total rewards practices for all Banfield associates. This role partners with senior leadership, field leaders, and Mars Veterinary Health (MVH) stakeholders to design innovative programs and strategies, while also developing tools, guidelines, and practices that enhance the value of total rewards. The goal is to improve associate satisfaction, attraction, and retention.

This position involves frequent and active engagement with Senior Leaders at both Banfield and MVH, leveraging their team to explore various layers of the organization, gaining a deep understanding of challenges, goals, and associate needs. With these actions the role positively influences goal achievement and elevates compensation knowledge and literacy across all levels of the organization.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
  • Design innovative compensation solutions that attract, motivate, and retain talent.
  • Ensure total rewards programs are mutually beneficial, aligned with both business objectives and associate needs, while maximizing awareness and operational efficiency for the team and program participants.
  • Manage end-to-end compensation processes for Hospital and Field Associates, including DVM pay strategies, production-based pay, para-professional compensation (base and incentives), and leadership incentives, overseeing all stages from creative design and stakeholder engagement to approval, execution, and ongoing management.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (Banfield leadership and People & Organization (P&O)) and ecosystem partners (MVH Rewards and Mars CPG) to enhance the associate experience while supporting harmonization and efficiency across the banners and positioning Banfield for long-term success.
  • Provide strategic guidance through analysis of external market trends and internal performance data to ensure competitiveness, plan effectiveness, affordability, and alignment with the overall Compensation and Rewards strategy.
  • Lead an agile team that continuously evaluates, adapts, creates, and sunsets rewards programs to drive desired behaviors, advocating for non-reward solutions when more appropriate.
  • Bring the people strategy to life by setting short-, mid-, and long-term goals with clear roadmaps, ensuring effective communication and alignment with key stakeholders and associates.
  • Manage and support signature processes such as merit reviews and annual variable pay, in partnership with Field, MVH, and P&O teams.
  • Serve as a strategic partner in organizational design, promotions, and new role creation through job evaluations and proposals across all organizational levels.
  • Drive efficiency through innovative use of technology and analytics, leveraging tools to automate processes, digitize programs, enhance the associate experience, and deliver actionable business insights.
  • Increase organizational understanding of Compensation and Rewards by delivering clear, modern communication and educational materials. Utilize internal platforms like bRewarded, collaborate with Corporate Affairs for effective outreach, and develop training for P&O teams, leaders, and associates.
  • Prepare and present proposals for approval through appropriate governance channels at both the Banfield and Mars organizational levels.
  • Build and maintain a high-performing team through effective training, coaching, team building, and succession planning, developing professional growth plans for each team member.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions:

  • This position requires 25% travel.
  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time. 
  • Project timelines and work volume/deadlines may often require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job.
  • Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve problems involving several variables.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate necessary equipment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate.
  • Environment where pets are present.

Experience, Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree is required, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • At least 10 years of experience in Human Resources, with a minimum of seven years in Rewards-related positions, are required.
  • Advanced Excel (for modeling, calculations) and PowerPoint (creating compelling proposals) are required.
  • Ability to design and maintain compensation programs is required.
  • Ability to lead complex projects is required.
  • Ability to navigate and influence stakeholders at all levels (peers to senior leadership) is required.
  • Three years of people management is preferred.
  • CPP and/or GRP is preferred.

The pay range for this role is $193,388 - $265,908.  

The pay range listed reflects a general hiring range for the area, with the specific rate determined based on the candidate's experience, skill level, abilities, and education, and may vary depending on location and schedule.
