Summary of Position:
The Surgical Support Technician functions as member of the surgical turnover team. Performs cleaning of the OR suite, setting up equipment for case, and checking case cart supplies with preference card. Acts as a second assistant during operative and other invasive procedures in accordance with scope of practice, experience, education and competency verification and opening sterile supplies. Prepare anesthesia machines and anesthesiology supplies before each case for operating rooms including the OB surgical suite.
Qualifications
Education:
● High School Diploma or GED preferred
Experience:
● Minimum three years recent experience in stocking and housekeeping in a hospital setting preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
● Knowledge of Aseptic Technique preferred
● Sufficient computer skills as are required to complete an online application and the pre-employment/annual Net Learning requirements
● In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred
Certifications/Licensure:
● Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain prior to start date

Essential Functions
1. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
2. Recognizes the end of surgical cases and participates in room turnover. Cleans and turns operating rooms. Delegating to team members when multiple cases end at the same time. Cleans equipment and returns to the appropriate storage area.
3. Prepares anesthesia machines and supplies prior to each case.
4. Assists surgical staff in setting up rooms
a. Prepares and positions equipment according to cases
b. Brings needed equipment into appropriate rooms.
c. Checks case cart supplies with the surgeon preference card.
d. Spreads sterile case supplies in OR room on appropriate tables and stands.
e. Picks surgery cases utilizing surgeon preference card, ensuring needed supplies, equipment, and instrumentation is available.
5. Opens sterile supplies and instrument trays for surgery cases
a. Inspects sterile items for contamination before opening.
b. Opens sterile packs according to procedure, always checking for outdates and package integrity.
c. Maintains sterility while opening sterile items for procedure.
d. Identifies sterility indicators for steam, steris, and plasma sterilization.
6. Performs second scrub duties for a variety of cases
a. Performs surgical hand scrub according to procedure and observes principles of aseptic technique.
b. Gowns self according to procedure, maintaining sterility.
c. Dons sterile gloves using closed glove technique.
d. Recognizes and corrects breaks in aseptic technique by self and others.
e. Controls own movement within sterile field.
7. Sets up the laser and runs the laser console to control the laser parameters under the supervision of the operating physician
8. Evaluates and assists with management of stock inventory in Surgery. Assists Surgery Buyer with management of PAR levels of non-stock inventory in surgery.
a. Makes daily rounds in surgical suite, sub sterile areas, and supply rooms to check PAR levels. Submits a daily stock order, when needed.
b. Informs Surgery Buyer when non-stock inventory is below PAR level and needs reorder.
c. Organizes supplies and equipment in a functional pattern.
d. Assists with restocking daily surgery order (as needed), making sure inventory is rotated as the supplies are restocked.
e. Assists and notifies Surgery Buyer of obsolete inventory.
f. Restocks non-stock inventory when appropriate, making sure inventory is rotated as the supplies are restocked.
9. Ensures the following areas are kept clean throughout the day
a. Bathrooms (4)
b. Locker Rooms
c. Lounges
d. Offices
e. Storage Rooms
f. Sub sterile areas
g. PACU and Amby
h. All other surgery related areas
10. Ensures that all weekly, and semiannual cleaning is done according to schedule and as directed
11. Ensures all carts, OR's and storage areas are stocked and maintained in an orderly fashion
a. Assists with stocking the OR's and anesthesia carts (when necessary).
b. Assists with stocking sub-sterile rooms daily.
c. Stocks irrigation cart as needed.
d. Restocks daily order in a timely fashion, when needed.
12. As directed, transports patients, ensuring patient safety
13. Changes contaminated sharps/needle bins when half full in all areas. Disposes according to policy.
14. Manages department equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner. Insures proper functioning of equipment and follows procedure when equipment malfunctions.
a. Thoroughly cleans all equipment at least once per week: Lasers, video towers, suction jugs, x-ray view boxes, carts and anesthesia equipment
b. Cleans and prepares gurneys
15. Actively participates in Shared Governance.
16. Safely transports bio-hazardous samples and specimens to the clinical laboratory.
17. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
