Position Summary  

Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement, the Associate Director of Student Engagement provides general administrative support to Student Engagement Staff and assists in managing the day-to-day functioning of Student Engagement.  The position supervises and supports two (2) Student Involvement Specialists and carries out student engagement signature events, student organization chartering and training and support of chartered student organizations and their advisors.  The Associate Director manages long term planning of Signature Events like Welcome Week, BC Bulldog Days and the many different Chartered Student Organizations' events and activities.  The Associate Director oversees the hiring, training and scheduling of the Student Engagement front desk student workers.  The Associate Director for Student Engagement must be a constant advocate for students to adhere to college, state and federal policies regarding proper usage of funds, purchasing, contracts and travel.  

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $70,037/year - $98,052/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Typically, new hires start no higher than $77,041/year based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This position may be eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act; salaries below the WA State Salary Threshold is eligible for overtime pay.

About the Department  

The Bellevue College Office of Student Engagement is committed to enriching student life by providing engagement and leadership opportunities that empower students to find their passion, build community and grow to be better world citizens who contribute to a vibrant and diverse campus culture. Student Engagement advises student organizations and students seeking involvement with campus engagement opportunities and works with Associated Student Government in the process of Chartering Student Organizations.  Student Engagement staff support and inspire purposeful involvement with a student development centered approach, and a commitment to foster student success academically, personally and professionally. We oversee The Watchdog student newspaper, manages Campus Activities Board, provides community involvement, training and leadership opportunities for students and carries out quarterly signature events like Welcome Week and BC Bulldog Days.  Student Engagement attends to the proper usage of S&A funds and supports other collaborating departments by advising student organizations on the required timelines and policies related to different types of requests.

Essential Functions  

Supervision

  • Hire, train and supervise two full-time Student Involvement Specialists and supervise front desk student workers and attend to walk-ins to Student Engagement office
  • Provide general administrative support to Student Engagement Office as advised by Director of Student Engagement
  • In collaboration with Director, train and supervise front desk student workers
  • Maintain inventory of office supplies and materials and work with Director and Budget Manager to make purchases when necessary

Oversee Chartered Student Organization Events    

  • Supervise and support Involvement Specialists in the approval process for Chartering Student Organizations and reviewing and supporting Project Proposals and Travel Requests
  • Manage calendar of student organization events and determine which staff will support larger events
  • Track approvals for student travel and advise student leaders and travel advisors on proper steps, safety protocols and pre-travel orientation

Lead collaboration and interdepartmental initiatives and referrals

  • Meet and plan interdepartmental themed leadership and learning programs, like Welcome Week, BC Bulldog Days, Affinity themed months and collaborative leadership opportunities for students
  • Meet with different departments to identify opportunities for collaboration and improvement, including, but not limited to Faculty Commons, Housing, Athletics, Wellness Center, other Student Affairs areas, BC Foundation, Library Media Services, Multi-Cultural Services, International Education and others

Advise and support student organizations and Student Engagement areas

  • Provide quarterly trainings for Student Organization leaders and advisors and review and update Student Organization and Advisor handbooks and resources
  • In absence of Involvement Specialists, supervise and support Campus Activity Board
  • Serve as advisor for other student areas as assigned by Director of Student Engagement, which may occasionally require travel

Safety and Liability Oversight

  • Serve as a departmental safety advocate and confirm that events and activities are carried out safely and with proper liability and risk concerns addressed
  • In absence of Director of Student Engagement, act as safety lead

Other duties

  • Stay up-to-date on best practices in Student Engagement via professional organizations, CUSP participation and other opportunities as approve by Director
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Student Engagement
  • Serve as department lead in absence of the Director of Student Engagement
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor's Degree and two years of work experience in Student Services, Student Engagement and/or Chartered Student Organizations.  Equivalent combination of experience and education can be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students, to include all ages, abilities, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, especially intercultural and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability work independently in a fast-paced environment with high levels of initiative, planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working in accordance with college and state funding policies, ethical guidelines, and other regulatory guidelines in the area of Student Affairs in Higher Education
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective internal and external customer relations
  • Experience fostering an atmosphere that is inclusive, sensitive to individual and cultural differences
  • Understanding of Student Development theories and their application to student involvement
  • Experience supervising both student employees and full-time staff
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in Student Development, Higher Education, Student Affairs or similar degree and prior experience working in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated effectiveness leading a team of staff and providing supervision
  • Experience as an administrator and user of a co-curricular customer service management system like Involve, Engage or other similar system
  • Experience providing CARE Team, Title IX and other on and off-campus referrals for students needing support
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service in a culturally sensitive environment
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, set priorities and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively
  • Knowledge of Bellevue College programs and departments and their policies
