Description

Position Summary  

The Cook 2 performs skilled cooking and leads food preparation as the head cook on assigned shifts, reporting to the Retail/Food Service Supervisor . This position assigns, instructs, and reviews the work of Cook 1 and student workers while supervising and participating in food preparation and service. Cook 2 is responsible for monitoring food inventory levels, ensuring adequate supplies are on hand, and communicating ordering needs to the Food Service Manager.

This is an 11-month cyclic position.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: 41,796/year - $55,572/year

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WPEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The employee is scheduled to work 40 hours per workweek. This is a Classified, overtime eligible position and represented by the Washington Public Employee Association of Higher Education (WPEA-HE).

About the Department  

Bellevue College (BC) Food Services serves the college main campus by offering a full service cafeteria, three coffee shops and a Pizza Cafe (Housing) that serve hot food, light snacks, pastries, espresso, tea and beverages.

Essential Functions  

Perform skilled cooking duties and lead food preparation

  • Supervises and participates in large-scale preparation and service of food on assigned shifts; prepares main entrées as directed and completes advance preparation for the following day¿s meals. 
  • Delegates, assigns, and reviews work performed by Cook 1 and student workers to ensure timely and accurate completion of food production tasks. 
  • Bakes pies, cakes, cookies, and other desserts. 
  • Inspects food during preparation to ensure proper quantity, quality, and handling. 
  • Instructs and trains Cook 1 and student workers in cooking, food preparation, and safe food handling practices. 
  • Operates kitchen equipment such as mixers, ovens, choppers, shredders, steamers, grills, grinders, steam kettles, fryers, meat/cheese slicer, and mandolin slicer. 
  • Assists in menu planning and determining food quantities to meet menu requirements; maintains records and prepares reports as required. 
  • Prepares food items according to standard menus, recipes, and verbal instructions, including vegetables, meats, soups, cereals, salads, desserts, beverages, and quick breads. 
  • Leads and participates in cleaning kitchen areas and equipment, ensuring sanitation and safety standards are met. 
  • Adjusts recipes based on volume of demand and service needs. 
  • Monitors food inventory levels to ensure adequate supplies are on hand for assigned meals and communicates ordering needs and shortages to the Food Service Manager. 
  • Leads and participates in the proper storage, utilization, and rotation of leftover ingredients and products. 
  • Provides effective customer service to students, employees, and visitors.

Catering

  • Oversees food preparation and service for catering events as assigned, ensuring quality, timing, and presentation standards are met. 
  • Directs, assigns, and supervises catering-related food preparation tasks performed by Cook 1 and student workers. 
  • Ensures catering food items, supplies, and equipment are prepared and ready for events. 
  • Monitors catering inventory needs and communicates ordering needs to the Food Service Manager. 
  • Communicates and works with the catering supervisor regarding event details, food requirements, and service timelines.

Other

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Two (2) years of cooking experience in a large-scale food service or culinary operation. 
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and the ability to follow written and oral instructions. 
  • Demonstrated effective customer service skills when working with employees, students, and visitors. 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Experience working with diverse colleagues and students in a collaborative and inclusive environment. 
  • Must obtain a King County Food Handler¿s Permit within fourteen (14) days of hire. 
  • Knowledge of: 
    • Food values and nutrition.
    • Personal hygiene, food handling, sanitation, and safety precautions.
    • Proper care and use of kitchen utensils and equipment.
    • Record keeping (e.g., inventory).
    • Report preparation (e.g., supply levels and usage).
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Culinary Arts certificate. Completion of course in large scale cooking may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • One (1) year supervisory experience.
