Seattle Central College is looking to hire a Director of Facilities & Plant Operations in the Facilities department.

Salary Range for this position is $87,362 to $120,644 annually (depending on experience).

Opportunity is open until filled, first review of materials will begin March 31, 2026. 

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Administrative Services (VPAS), the Director of Facilities and Plant Operations is responsible for planning, coordinating, assessing, and directing the building maintenance, alteration, repair, Capital Projects, equipment maintenance, and custodial and grounds operations activities of Seattle Central College and its associated locations in a safe, cost-efficient, and customer service-oriented manner to support the College`s strategic goals and mission. 

The Director of Facilities and Plant Operations provides administrative support to the VPAS and the College leadership in coordinating activities with internal and external organizations and agencies on matters pertaining to the effective functionality of the buildings, grounds, and plant operations of the College. The incumbent must exercise sound independent judgment in the execution of their assigned responsibilities and be able to meet deadlines under minimal supervision.  They shall be expected to conduct themselves with the highest level of ethics, integrity, honesty, and confidentiality. 

This position supervises Exempt-unrepresented, Exempt-represented, Classified, Student, Workstudy, and temporary employees. This position supervises Exempt-unrepresented, Exempt-represented, Classified, Student, Workstudy, and temporary employees.

This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, primarily 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This position works 100% of the time on-site.

What you will be working on:

  • Directs the day-to-day administration of the facilities and plant operations of the College, including the development, execution, and maintenance of a facility management program in operations of campus services (e.g., custodial, maintenance, grounds, locksmith, mailroom and receiving) while ensuring that organizational structure provides for appropriate accountability, performance feedback and evaluation. 
  • Contributes to the development and execution of the College's Major Institution Master Plan to advance the College's mission.
  • Leads the planning, execution, and delivery of multimillion-dollar capital improvement projects including infrastructure upgrades, renovations, new construction, and major equipment installations while contributing to capital planning, capital budget development, and biennial state capital appropriation requests through issue identification, condition assessments, and the development of cost estimates and technical specifications. 
  • Interprets and ensures compliance with governing laws, codes, policies, and procedures associated with all aspects of the daily facility management operations at each location of the College (Main Campus, Seattle Maritime Academy, Wood Technology Center, Health Education Center). 
  • Plans and directs the management of a high standard of maintenance, repair, and appearance of the College facilities, equipment, and grounds with sensitivity to preventive maintenance by regularly inspecting and identifying problem areas for assigning work. 
  • Ensures scheduling of routine inspections and monitoring of each Seattle Central College location for compliance with Seattle Central College & District safety policies and procedures and all Federal, State, and Local regulations regarding general safety and environmental health and safety; recommends or requires proper elimination of hazards and/or management of hazardous materials. 
  • Directs the building maintenance/repair and contracted service with vendors to ensure that departmental building maintenance/repair service standards are consistent with occupational, environmental, and physical health and safety policies, procedures, and contract agreements. 
  • Recommends high visibility/large scope projects to the College leadership for consideration and approval. 
  • Coordinates activities with the College leadership on issues related to maintaining the physical buildings/grounds and leading departmental supervisors and their teams in supporting special events. 
  • Adheres to Collective Bargaining Agreements and all of District's and Seattle Central's rules and regulations to ensure efficient support for campus operations in guaranteeing a safe learning environment that promotes student success. 
  • Develops and monitors the operating budgets and oversees financial planning and financial management for the Facilities and Plant Operations Department, including one-off special projects and establishes and monitors internal financial controls to ensure all contractor and vendor invoices are reviewed, approved, and paid in accordance with contractual terms and organizational policies . 
  • Ensures projects are completed on time, within scope, and on or under approved budgets through proactive cost monitoring and risk mitigation. 
  • Authorizes and orders the purchase of new equipment, major repair parts, materials, or services necessary for departmental operation in collaboration with the District Purchasing Office; reviews and approves maintenance and operations requisitions with budgetary limitations. 
  • Directs and oversees the management of the Department's PCards consistent with the District In collaboration with departmental managers, directs the development, scheduling, and evaluation of predictive, preventive, and general maintenance for building components and equipment, including work orders, task lists, and computerized facility maintenance management systems. 
  • Develops and documents processes and procedures.
  • In collaboration with the Security Department, directs the departmental managers in coordinating appropriate access control (key management/access cards) to the College facilities. 
  • Maintains inventory records of fixed assets and oversees the administration of the College's disposal (e.g., waste disposal), storage, and surplus program in collaboration with the District Purchasing Office. 
  • In collaboration with the VPAS and other departments (e.g., Safety and Security, District Team), manages the emergency operations planning and response; leads and identifies the Department's essential staff for inclement weather periods; assists with the energy utilization and conservation programs for reducing costs and maximizing efficiency (e.g., the College's EcoDistrict decarbonization project). 
  • As required, chairs or serves on various internal and external committees, including but not limited to the Facilities Operations Management Advisory Committee, Safety Committee, and ad-hoc and one-off committees regarding capital projects, bids, and special events/projects and recruitment. 
  • Collaborates with the Capital Projects Team in assisting with project planning and construction operations of the College, including the development, review, maintenance, remodeling, renovation, coordination, and monitoring of projects to ensure that they align with the College's goals and priorities. 
  • Assists in the coordination and execution of major, minor, and intermediate work renovation projects utilizing both in-house staff and outside vendors or subcontractors; maintains records and prepares reports; communicates project status and progress to the College leadership, as needed.   
  • Assists the Capital Projects Team with the Facility Conditions Survey and determination and utilization of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) data for informed decision-making. 
  • Collaborates with the Capital Projects Team in working with staff, consultants, engineers, architects, contractors, and state agencies (e.g., Department of Enterprise Services) to ensure compliance with the specified scope of projects and construction design.

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business administration, public administration, building construction, or a closely related field OR five (5) or more years of relevant progressively responsible experience. 
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in physical plant operations; that is the management of building and equipment maintenance and repair operations and facilities planning of large building complexes ; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may substitute formal education. 
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management systems to ensure the prompt management of work orders and tracking results and costs. 
  • Ability to collect and formulate data, with the capacity to read and interpret building and grounds plans and specifications. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relations with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including staff at the District Office and other campuses, vendors, state agencies, and community partners. 
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and colleagues irrespective of their backgrounds and affiliations, in adherence to Seattle Colleges commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and community. 
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable state and federal laws and regulations, and institutional policies and procedures, including safety protocols, lowering the costs and pollution of fossil fuels, integrating sustainability initiatives to reduce long-term operating cost, and their enforcement. 
  • Experience overseeing custodial/grounds and facilities maintenance operations and supervising tradespersons, with the ability to function in a unionized environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including conveying complex information to a variety of audiences in a digestible manner for faculty, students, and staff. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to the professional development of self and staff members. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be available for on-call situations during off hours and weekends as requested. 
  • A valid Washington driver's license.
