North Seattle College is looking to hire an Early Childhood Educator 3 in Childcare under Student Services.

Salary Range for this position is $54,432-$73,236 annually.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Childcare Center Associate Director, the Early Childhood Specialist 3 is a lead teacher position that works under general direction and has responsibility for regularly assigning, instructing, and checking work of student employees, interns, volunteers, and substitutes in the classroom and/or has responsibility for the daily operation of an early childhood program in the absence of the manager. Responsibilities include: establish & maintain a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate learning environment for toddlers and preschoolers; regularly planning, presenting & evaluating educational & recreational children's activities; communicating with and providing information to parents/guardians; developing & maintaining a classroom environment that meets child care licensing regulations & applicable policies and procedures.

This position supervises Work-study Students, Volunteers, Substitutes, Parent/Guardians in the classroom, and observers.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE

North Seattle College (NSC) Campus Childcare Center offers unique opportunities to provide a joyful, high quality school environment for all who are part of our community. Through close quarterly and daily collaboration within our entire team, our lead teachers work together and rotate leading activities and lessons with all the children aged 18 months to 5 years old. This approach cultivates a nurturing school community, building relationships based on trust and belonging while honoring the family traditions and backgrounds reflected around us.  

We provide on-site parent education opportunities through our campus Parent Education program and a practicum placement site for college students taking courses through our campuses Early Childhood Education program. Lead teachers mentor part time student workers, helping them to develop professionalism, skills in intercultural communication, and how to facilitate an age-appropriate environment.

This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, primarily 7:45 am to 4:45 pm.

This position works 100% of the time on-site

Work Schedule: This is a cyclic, 11 month per year appointment, with scheduled/intermittent unpaid leave during the calendar year when the College is closed. This position is typically scheduled to work Monday through Friday 7:45AM to 4:45PM. The schedule may vary depending on program needs. May be required to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Be punctual and maintain consistent attendance (90% required)

What you will be working on:

  • Assess the social, intellectual, emotional, nutritional, and physical needs of children enrolled in the College's childcare program including regularly assessing individual children's learning levels; monitor and record level of development and progress of each child.
  • Develops child- and adult-directed educational activities based upon assessed needs
  • Regularly plans, presents, designs and evaluates developmentally appropriate educational materials and activities for specific use with children in the program
  • Posts curriculum plans for parents/guardians and colleagues/peers
  • Maintains an organized classroom environment that addresses all developmental areas of learning; keeping displayed material updated regularly
  • Utilizes positive guidance methods to support a positive social and emotional learning environment
  • Incorporates cultural awareness and diversity into the classroom curriculum
  • Works collaboratively with co-workers to share complete and accurate information, techniques, instructions, and feedback. Use more than one method of communication as needed
  • Communicate with parent/guardians regularly. Discuss the progress of the children with their parent/guardians and respond to their concerns. Use more than one method of communication as needed.
  • Supervises or directs the work of classroom staff and volunteers
  • Maintains and implement childcare licensing and accreditation requirements and regulations
  • Follows health department standards and center policies and procedures
  • Maintains familiarity with staff and parent/guardian handbook policies and procedures
  • Maintains a healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environment for children in the program.
  • Receives visitors and telephone/email inquiries to the center. Provide information about the program to prospective and current parent/guardians relating to program philosophy, procedures and routines
  • Attends staff meetings, parent/guardian/teacher meetings and other meetings/staff trainings as required by the Director
  • Participates in on-going professional development and maintain current knowledge of the early childhood field
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of program activities and projects
  • Effectively manages time to meet required deadlines and work schedules
  • Inventory/order/organize materials for classroom use
  • Administers medication and first aid; handle emergencies as they arise
  • Prepares food for children, clean food preparation area, wash dishes
  • Launders children's bedding as well as disinfect classroom toys
  • Be responsible for the opening and or closing of the childcare program

What you bring as a candidate: 

  • AA or BA in Early Childhood Education or related field AND one or more years of experience working with young children in a group setting
  • Ability to work, both individually and as a team member, with people of diverse educational, ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds including children, parent/guardians, staff and the general public
  • Ability to communicate verbally (English) and in writing (English) with parent/guardians
  • Prior to hire must provide documentation of negative TB test results not more than one year from hire date.
  • Prior to start date: Verification of measles vaccination or verification of immunity from a medical provider.
  • Within 30 days of hire, DCYF 30 Hours STARS basic training or approved alternate ECE courses and 10 hours of ongoing early childhood training annually (STARS)
  • Must successfully pass Criminal history/child abuse background check
  • By the time of hire, completion of the following trainings and certifications:

        o Blood borne Pathogen training

        o DCYF mandatory training (ie, Safe Sleep, Mandated Reporter, etc.),

        o Current Washington Food Service Worker permit

        o Current certification in child First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation

  • Must have knowledge of and implement State of Washington Minimum Licensing Requirements for Child Care Centers WAC: 388-295
  • Proficient use with programs such as Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs etc.
