Position Overview  

Under the general direction of the Dean of Student Learning, the Full-time Tenure Track Faculty in Earth & Environmental Sciences teach multiple environmental and earth science courses that may explore astronomy; atmospheric processes, Earth¿s climate system; ecosystems; environmental science, physical geography; geology; soil science, and water science. Cascadia faculty support active and interactive learning through collaborative activities and inquiry-based approaches that challenge students to think critically, creatively, and reflectively and that foster communication skills with our complex world. Faculty provide leadership and contribute to the implementation and enhancement of Cascadia's curriculum, course of study, and college-wide review of student achievement.  Tenure-track and tenured faculty engage in service to the college and professional development activities.  Service activities may include committees and councils, as well as discipline leadership and projects.

Full-time Tenure Track Faculty in Earth & Environmental Science are expected to daily demonstrate the following qualities: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.
 

Employee Type: Full-Time (Academic Year 172 Contract Days)

Initial Salary: $78,718.19 - $97,054.10  (includes 5% King County Premium Pay) County Premium Pay (KCPP)

Essential Duties

• Prepare clear objectives, course syllabi, course materials and learning experiences for each course
• Teach assigned courses in day, evening and alternate time blocks as needed
• Maintain appropriate course records and documentation
• Provide instructional services to the community through various delivery methods, including classroom/laboratory instruction, eLearning, and learning community activities
  Assess student outcomes and use the results to strengthen curricula 
• Design, develop, assess, and oversee program curriculum and outcomes
• Assess student learning and instructional/institutional practices
• Advise and mentor students
• Facilitate student learning through in-class and out-of-class activities

• Participate in team-based activities and college governance
• Assist in maintaining ongoing communications with community organizations, other local colleges, and public agencies in support of student learning

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in astronomy, atmospheric science, meteorology, climatology, environmental science, earth sciences, geology, physical geography, geospatial science, hydrology, natural resource management, soil science, water science, or closely-related natural science discipline
• 18+ quarter credit hours in graduate level coursework in Earth or Environmental Science   
• One year successful post-secondary teaching experience in Earth or Environmental Science    
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in education and the workplace
• Demonstrated commitment to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a multicultural workplace and educational environment

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in college-level teaching in non-majors/general education science elective courses
• Research experience in a STEM field
• Experience designing innovative lab techniques and strategies for classroom assessment
• Successful experience with teaching in multiple modalities (online, hybrid, face-to-face)
• Ability to successfully communicate (written and orally) in a language in addition to English

Knowledge of:

• Broad knowledge of Earth & Environmental sciences with advanced specialization in one or more areas taught at Cascadia College
• Knowledge of best practices in teaching methods and student engagement 
• Knowledge of international student issues and intercultural competency 
• Effective leadership skills

Skill in:

• Technology assisted instruction and/or classroom management systems (i.e., Canvas)
• English communication (written and orally); communication in a second language highly desired
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills  

Ability to:

• Teach effectively across multiple earth science and/or environmental science courses and formats 
• Implement effective teaching and learning practices 
• Facilitate student learning 
• Enhance learning with an online course management system, such as Canvas 
• Incorporate technology into the classroom 
• Successfully work with individuals with diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to prior education history, future education goals, English proficiency, race, color, religion, sex and/or gender (including expression), sexual orientation, national origin, age, backgrounds, abilities, and national origin

Physical Work Environment

Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The College is currently in hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Full-time faculty are expected to maintain a physical presence on-campus that matches the expectations described in the current collective bargaining agreement. Employees will need to provide their own remote workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. During on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.

Positions in this class typically require operating a computer, communicating, observing, and repetitive motions.

This position involves exerting between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Requires ability to stand for extended periods during laboratory instruction 
• Standard academic calendar with teaching during day and some evening hours 
• Work performed in classroom, lab, office, and occasional field settings.
• Requires ability to use standard instructional technology and lab equipment, which may involve occasional lifting or moving up to ~25 lbs.

The salary will be based on the current faculty salary schedule; placement is based on education and related experience. The current range  $78,718.19 - $97,054.10 annually for a 172-day appointment.
