Position Summary  

The Art Department seeks an Adjunct Faculty member to teach ART108: Introduction to Hand and Power Tools, a course focused on the safe use of woodworking tools. Course content will be developed in collaboration with the Sculpture faculty lead and will include instruction in the department's standardized Woodshop Safety Training Program. The instructor must be able to teach the course safely with or without a shop assistant.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6,418.75 - $7,824.66  Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

The Bellevue College Art Department teaches courses in art history, printmaking, drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. Our department will be moving into our new home, the brand-new W Building, in Winter 2027. This building and its studios were designed closely with Art Faculty, and will excel at providing contemporary spaces for faculty to teach and students to learn.

Essential Functions  
  • Teach ART108 Introduction to Hand and Power Tools. Curriculum for this course will be based on both the successful applicants skills and interests and in collaboration with the faculty lead for the Sculpture discipline.
  • Teach Woodshop Safety Training Program including shop safety rules, hazard awareness, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor student activities during instructional sessions to ensure safe practices and compliance with established procedures.
  • Perform real time equipment setup, adjustment, and basic maintenance during classes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment, including routine inspection of tools, machines, and work areas.
  • Participate in advising students and improving student success.
  • Collaborate with faculty, and program staff to support curriculum goals, safety planning, and continuous improvement of shop operations.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • At least two years of experience working in an academic woodshop, which may include experience as a student, faculty member, or shop technician.
  • Demonstrate proficiency as a skilled woodworker by the submission of images of personal work.
  • Demonstrate ability to safely use a variety of standard hand and power tools AND communicating these processes clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to complete equipment setup and maintenance during instructional activities (ex: replace bandsaw blades/adjust guides, troubleshoot SawStop brake issues, build simple shop jigs as needed, etc.).
  • Demonstrate ability to create and maintain a safe, inclusive learning environment for students at all levels and aptitudes, from all backgrounds, and with a variety of learning objectives.
