Position Summary
The Reading and Writing Lab (RAWLs) at Bellevue College is seeking a part-time Reading and Writing Lab instructor starting Winter/Spring Quarters 2025. Reading and Writing Lab Instructors support students in developing the reading skills, writing skills and learning strategies they need to succeed in college classes. RAWLs Instructors use pedagogical content knowledge linked to language acquisition, adult literacy, digital literacy, reading theory and current approaches to computer mediated language learning to develop and implement a program for individualized adult learning.
Pay, Benefits & Work ScheduleAdjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.
Compensation is $42.52 - $52.21 per hour. Typically, new hire starts no higher than $42.52/ hour. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.
Adjunct Professor in this position can expect to work when the Reading Lab is most utilized, 10am-3pm, Monday-Friday, and subject to the Bellevue College quarterly schedule with regards to holidays, breaks between quarters and days off. In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

Essential FunctionsReading and Writing Lab Instructors support students in developing the reading skills and learning the reading strategies they need to succeed in college classes. Reading Lab Instructors use pedagogical content knowledge linked to language acquisition, adult literacy, digital literacy, reading theory and current approaches to computer mediated language learning to develop and implement a program for individualized adult learning.
Instructional Delivery:
· Assess the individual progress of each student in reading and writing
· Assist with creation and implementation of both reading and writing workshops
· Recommend instructional pathways through reading lab software options.
· Diagnose the effectiveness of the software each student is working on.
· Work with instructors and professors to adjust each student's placement as their learning needs evolve.
· Lead classes of 20 - 40 students at the beginning of the quarter to orient credit and non-credit students to the Reading and Writing Lab.
· Conduct 50-minute classes and workshops on writing and reading strategies for students.
Assessment and Feedback:
· Write weekly digital feedback in each student's profile.
· Face-to-face tutoring in reading and writing.
· Face-to-face feedback through student - lab instructor conferences for reading and writing.
Faculty Development and Training:
· Work with program leads to incorporate instructional content and pedagogical approaches linked to the Reading and Writing Lab for faculty workshops, trainings, and peer teaching
· Mentor linked course instructors and orienting them to lab materials related to linked classroom instruction Lab Operations
· Maintain electronic database and digital records
· Develop and maintain organizational systems for storing data about student progress and lab usage.
· Report computer-related problems to technology staff; follow up with technology staff as needed.
· Develop recommendations for purchases linked to the operational success of the lab (computers, printers, folders, headphones, curricular materials as necessary).
· Develop and maintain the Reading and Writing Lab website.
· Maintain lab materials and supplies.
· Collaborate with RaWL faculty and Chairs to schedule quarterly instructional workshops, literacy support services, and quarterly literacy events.
Leadership:
· Train and supervise new and returning students/adult learners.
· Develop and maintain learning-centered lab policies so students have a consistent experience in the Reading and Writing Lab and they understand how lab policies are tied to their learning.
· Engage as part of a guided, collaborative work team.
· Meaningfully contribute to establishing and maintaining a student-centered, equity-informed, and collaborative educational culture, while ensuring an emotionally and physically safe learning environment.
- Master's degree in education, reading theory, literacy education, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience teaching or tutoring, including teaching in diverse settings.
- Experience with computer-mediated language learning and educational technology.
- Proven track record of utilizing student-centered, equity-informed, growth-mindset teaching or tutoring practices.
- Experience employing anti-racist pedagogies, culturally responsive curriculum, and inclusive teaching practices.
- Experience using DreamBox Plus as a tutor or teacher, including managing student and teacher access, creating user accounts, and monitoring student progress.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 software or apps such as Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, Bookings, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and others.
- Experience teaching or tutoring literacy to adult learners.
- Experience teaching in open enrollment higher education settings.
- Coursework or certification in adult literacy, language acquisition, digital literacy, or reading theory.
- Experience using learning technologies commonly utilized at Washington State Community and Technical Colleges including ctcLink, Canvas, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and others.
