PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

Secretary and Medical Assistant for Presurgical Screening and the Surgical Readiness Center. Ensures patients scheduled for surgery at BVH are appropriately scheduled for their Presurgical Screening Nurse Interview, and coordinates required preoperative testing and appointments. Maintain logbooks, monitors, processes, and files outside medical documentation, and responds to incoming phone calls and inquiries. Register, Check-In, and room patient's arriving for Surgical Readiness Center appointments.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duty 1: Schedule PreSurgical Screening Nurse Interview for patients having surgery at BVH in a timely manner prior to surgery.

  • Duty 2: Monitor, title, and file outside medical records and other documentation needed for surgical preparation.

  • Duty 3: Answer and appropriately direct telephone calls, respond to patient questions and coordinate messages for clinical staff.

  • Duty 4: Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPPA, hospital policies, and established procedure.

  • Duty 5: Tailors care to meet the age specific and developmentally appropriate patient needs.

  • Duty 6: Demonstrates knowledge in correct use of all forms of communication and documentation utilized in day-to-day operations of the department.

  • Duty 7: Register and Check-In patients for Surgical Readiness Center appointments, verifying demographic and insurance information as required.

  • Duty 9:  Room patients for their Surgical Readiness Center appointment, including obtaining patient height, weight, and vital signs.

  • Duty 10: Perform additional administrative and clinical duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the Presurgical Screening and Surgical Readiness Center.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in Typing, Filing, Medical Terminology and computer skills in Cerner, and Microsoft Office programs required.

  • Ability to do multi-task simultaneously required.

  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.

  • Individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status.  Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area's policies and procedures.      

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Secretary/Clerk experience.

  • Medical Assistant experience

  • Associate degree in related field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent activities in walking, sitting, lifting, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting and standing. The associate will be required to lift 50 pounds or more. This position requires individuals to lift work above the Shoulder. The associate must have corrected vision and hearing in the normal range. Individual must have excellent verbal communication skills to perform daily tasks.
