Propane Tank Setter

Position is based out of Alpena, Michigan



Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE:
Deliver and install propane tanks to residential and commercial customers by safely operating a boom truck and installing equipment necessary to operate the tank, complying with state and federal regulations governing the transport and delivery of hazardous materials.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Delivery and Installation: Load and secure tank specified for delivery. Plan route for each trip to minimize travel time and ensure safe road conditions. Set tank, ensuring location has been prepared correctly. Install copper conduit, gauges, relief valves and other necessary equipment. This may require entering the customer's building to ensure proper installation. Check valves and connections for any leaks and adjust as needed. Obtain customer signatures as necessary. Provides work direction to Tank Setter Helper when one is assigned to an installation project.
2. Maintain Equipment: Complete daily pre- and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance work as necessary. Report any operational hazards, such as hazards in loading or unloading areas, or equipment issues to the Branch Manager. Keep assigned vehicle clean.
3. Recordkeeping: Promptly and accurately maintain daily manifests and trip logs, equipment logs, sales records and other operational records required by company policy. Record all materials used for each installation. 1
4. Hazardous Materials: Report any spills immediately, to both the supervisor and the Hazmat Emergency Response number. Maintain required records of any incidents.
5. Customer Service: Establish and maintain satisfactory working relationship with customers. Notify the supervisor of changes in customer business or needs. Be aware of opportunities to increase sales and improve customer relations, and bring these to the attention of the manager.

DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The Tank Setter ensures that each installation meets mechanical standards for safety and fire prevention. If the site is not prepared properly, the Tank Setter contacts the manager and the site owner to review necessary changes. The Tank Setter selects the best route for each delivery,
considering road conditions and access to unloading areas. Follows company safety and operating procedures as well as traffic laws at all times. State and federal regulations govern mechanical installations. Issues with customers are referred to the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
· High school diploma or GED combined with successful completion of driver training certification from an accredited technical school or specialty driving program, combined with a minimum of six months experience operating comparable equipment.

· Must be 21 years old, as required by DOT regulations in order to legally haul hazardous materials.
· Must possess and maintain a current, valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with required endorsements to operate a motor vehicle over 26,000 pounds. Endorsements include air brake, tanker and hazardous materials.
· Must complete all procedures necessary to maintain the Class B CDL, including completion of an annual physical conducted by a physician of company's choosing at company expense, submitting to random drug and alcohol testing, and annual review of driving record violations.
· Possess state Class C training and certification for hazardous materials, complying with EPA and MDEQ regulations.
· Basic math skills and the ability to calculate and record rate, ratio and percentage data.
· Good communication skills and ability to interact with customer representatives.
· Must be able to work on uneven surfaces and ascend and descend a ladder safely.
· Sound, mature judgment and ability to operate safely at all times
