
Description
The Animal Care Supervisor provides leadership, management and supervisory responsibilities in the administration of all animal care functions at the Edmonton Valley Zoo (EVZ) and John Janzen Nature Centre (JJNC). Reporting directly to the Operations Supervisor, the successful candidate has demonstrated knowledge and skill pertaining to the health, care and well-being of a broad zoological collection including species specific care standards, environmental exhibit design and maintenance, husbandry protocols and best practices, implementation and development of animal training and enrichment programs, welfare monitoring, animal nutrition and working safely with dangerous animals. The position supervises and manages all animal care staff and daily activities in accordance with provincial, national and international standards of care as set out by the Canadian Accredited Zoos and Aquariums and industry best practices in animal welfare and husbandry.
What you will do:
- Lead the day to day management of the animal care program in collaboration with the Animal Care Crew Leaders and team members
- Build and maintain effective teams by recruiting, coaching, mentoring, advising and counselling staff to create a culture of growth and development
- Develop annual training and development plans for animal care team; ensure completion of all mandatory and functional training
- Support the development and analysis of the work plan in collaboration with Animal Care Crew Leaders and stakeholders to ensure the effective and efficient use of the zoo's resources (people, equipment, budget, etc)
- Review and evaluate exhibits, service areas and related public access to ensure conditions and appearance adhere to facility expectations
- Provide input in the design and planning process for the animal exhibits and Institution Collection Plan
- Participate actively in strategic and operational planning
- Provide oversight and guidance on requirements to meet daily operational needs as well as programs and projects reflected in annual work plans
- Provide animal husbandry and care expertise and guidance for research initiatives, program and event planning, capital development projects and communications initiatives
- Determine and update work standards
- Supervise the movement of animals within the Zoo
- Demonstrate effective and efficient problem solving strategies
- Ensure all City Occupational Health and Safety Standards and ENVISO policies and procedures are followed
- Analyze and interpret financial data and management reports
- Participate in performance & attendance management of crew members
- Perform other duties as required
