The Community, Recreation & Culture is looking for energetic, responsible and qualified individuals to work as Aquatic Fitness Instructors at various recreation and Leisure Centers throughout the City of Edmonton. Classes include Shallow Water, Deep Water, Water Works, and Aquamat Fit, just to name a few!

As an Aquatic Fitness Instructor, you are responsible for providing high-quality aquatic fitness instruction and ensuring the safety of all participants during your classes. You will design and lead exercise routines that cater to various abilities, helping participants achieve their fitness goals in a fun and inclusive environment. Beyond leading the workout, you will manage administrative tasks related to your sessions and maintain instructional equipment according to facility standards. Safety is our top priority, and you will collaborate with on-duty lifeguards to maintain a secure deck environment. What you will do:

  • Design and lead aquatic group fitness classes, delivering excellence in service and programming

  • Evaluate and adjust aquatic fitness programs based on participant age, ability and fitness level Incorporate motivating music selections into fitness classes

  • Demonstrate correct exercise methods and proper use of exercise equipment

  • Provide excellent communication, must be able to deliver instructions clearly and effectively

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to motivate and encourage participants

  • Maintain a safe environment for customers and staff in and around the water

  • Attend mandatory in-service training and complete online training when required

  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Possession of a current leadership certification specializing in aquatics as recognized by AFLCA (Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association) or CALA (Canadian Aqua-fitness Leaders Alliance) or Water-ART or YMCA Group Fitness in Aqua-fitness
  • Equivalencies or experience in group fitness/ other related disciplines will be considered

Assets:

  • Additional fitness certifications 
  • Experience leading a variety of aquatic classes
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid awards

Skills required for success:

  • Valid CPR C & AED
  • Must be able to swim a minimum of 25 meters (shallow and deep end)
  • Must be willing to complete the applicable training programs
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques employed in aquatic fitness instruction
  • Confidence in recognizing emergency situations and knowing how to react accordingly

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Applicants may be required to complete a swim test and lead a drop-in aqua-fit class comfortably both in and out of the water

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • Various locations Edmonton (City Wide)
  • This position involves working in a humid, noisy pool environment with frequent exposure to water and pool chemicals
  • The role requires high physical activity, including demonstrating exercises from the pool deck or in the water
  • Shift work is required to meet facility programming needs
  • This role requires maintaining awkward or constrained physical positions for prolonged periods
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items, pushing, pulling, and reaching - requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states

Up to 5 part time temporary, ongoing positions

Hours of Work:  Up to 32 hours per week. Evening and weekend availability is required.

Salary Range: $22.557 - $31.023 (Hourly) Aquafit Instructors are paid 2 hours  for each Aquafit Class taught.
