The Community Recreation and Culture Branch is looking for dedicated and safety-minded individuals to join our team as Arena Attendants / Labourer IIs. In this role, you will play a key part in providing exceptional recreational spaces for our community. As an Arena Attendant / Labourer II, you will be responsible for ensuring excellent, safe, and clean playing surfaces across 20 arenas and 7 field facilities. This position balances specialized ice and athletic field maintenance with essential custodial duties to ensure our facilities meet top-tier standards. You will independently plan and prioritize your daily tasks to align with scheduled facility bookings and user needs. Acting as a friendly point of contact, you will support visitors, answer questions, and build positive relationships with facility users. Safety is a top priority, and you will actively participate in environmental and safety programs to maintain a secure environment for everyone. 

What will you do?

  • Perform quality ice resurfacing using specialized equipment like Olympia or Zamboni machines, including hand and power edging
  • Flood, build, and maintain high-quality ice surfaces, and safely remove ice when required
  • Maintain natural and artificial sports fields through tasks such as mowing, irrigation, cleaning, grooming, and snow removal
  • Complete detailed custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, cleaning, and restocking washrooms, dressing rooms, showers, bleachers, and arena glass
  • Provide courteous customer service, support facility users with concerns, and manage the signing out of dressing room keys
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures, complete monthly safety inspections, and participate in Hazard Assessment reviews to ensure a safe workspace
  • Other related duties as required
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • An interest in or knowledge of arena and field facilities maintenance

Assets: 

  • Experience operating ice resurfacing equipment (Olympia or Zamboni)
  • Familiarity with WHMIS, Enviso, or specialized driver safety training
  • Experience maintaining diverse sports surfaces like rubber tracks, shale tracks, or artificial turf

Skills required for success:

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with facility users and collaborators
  • Excellent time management skills to balance maintenance tasks with high-detail cleaning duties
  • Ability to work effectively in an independent manner while contributing to a productive team environment
  • Ability to understand and execute clear verbal and written instructions and maintain simple records
  • Knowledge of safety precautions, hazards, and protective equipment associated with manual labour and facility operations

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labour and lift up to 50 lbs with assistance
  • Willingness to work under various environmental conditions, including extreme hot/cold temperatures and precipitation
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection
  • Requirements to work shift work, split shifts, and periods of working alone
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • This position involves working across various City of Edmonton arenas and sports field facilities. You will experience a vibrant, active environment that moves between indoor ice rinks and outdoor sports fields
  • The role requires significant physical effort, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting in environments that can be cold, humid, or dusty
  • You will often work independently, handling time-sensitive schedules while interacting directly with diverse groups of community recreation enthusiasts
  • Shift work requirements - 0 to 39 hours per week. Shifts may range from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Must be available to work Saturdays
  • Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends is required
