Fort Edmonton Park is looking for energetic and passionate individuals to join our team for DARK, Edmonton's premier Halloween festival. This is your chance to step into the spotlight, showcase your performance skills, and create unforgettable, safe, and world-class entertainment experiences for our community.

As a Scare Actor (Program Specialist - Drama), you will serve as a primary facilitator of immersive guest experiences within our fall seasonal attraction. You will execute high-quality, theatrical performances that maintain character narrative and atmosphere. On a nightly basis, you will transform into a designated character using costumes, makeup, or prosthetics to interact with visitors through scripted and improvisational "scare" techniques. Beyond acting, you will play a vital role in managing guest flow and strictly adhering to safety and operational protocols to ensure the entertainment environment remains secure and engaging. This frontline service role is perfect for collaborative performers who thrive in a highly structured, dynamic, and fast-paced team environment.

What will you do?

  • Execute high-quality, theatrical performances and maintain character consistency and atmosphere throughout the nightly schedule
  • Transform into a designated character on a daily basis using scripted and improvisational "scare" techniques
  • Interact directly with members of the public to provide entertainment and direction, utilizing high levels of non-verbal influence and situational awareness
  • Monitor guest behavior and manage attraction flow efficiently to keep the environment safe and secure
  • Maintain personal performance equipment, costumes, makeup, and prosthetics in a state of operational readiness
  • Attend all required rehearsals, orientations, and nightly briefings/warm-ups
  • Communicate effectively with the Attractions Supervisor and artistic leads to receive performance feedback and safety updates
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum of 18 years of age given the specific requirements of the festival

Assets:

  • Enrolment in or partial completion of a post secondary program related to performing arts or other educational backgrounds
  • Experience working in a haunted house, maze attraction, or immersive theater setting
  • Background or training in physical theater, non-verbal communication, or vocal projection techniques
  • Experience in crowd management or customer service within a festival or public attraction setting

Skills required for success:

  • Proven experience with theatrical performance, live acting, or improvisational performance
  • Strong improvisational skills and the ability to maintain character integrity under various conditions
  • Excellent situational awareness and the ability to read crowd dynamics quickly
  • Exceptional verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Ability to follow complex artistic direction and safety protocols simultaneously
  • High physical stamina and resilience required for repetitive physical movements and vocal work

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, which include standing, walking, stretching, and performing repetitive movements for extended periods in dark environments.

     

Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a dynamic, highly structured nighttime festival environment within Fort Edmonton Park
  • Performers will work in low-light, foggy, loud, and atmospheric indoor and outdoor settings
  • The role requires wearing specialized theatrical costumes, makeup, or prosthetics for the duration of the shift
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Successful candidates may be eligible for recall for the 2027 season

Up to 200 temporary part-time positions for up to 3 months

Hours of Work: up to 39 hours per week. Weekend, evenings, and holidays required.

Salary Range: $21.918 - $26.183 Hourly
