Are you an early career Professional Engineer or Scientist looking to make a meaningful impact on urban environmental sustainability? As an Environmental Professional with the City of Edmonton, you will provide independent, technical contaminated site expertise under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Professional. You will serve as a vital technical resource, guiding City departments to meet regulatory compliance obligations, manage financial and legal liabilities, and evaluate risks associated with known or potential environmental contamination. In this role, you will lead contaminated site evaluations, influence project planning, design, and delivery, and engage directly with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance while optimizing the use of public resources.
What will you do?
- Synthesize historical site data, evaluate contamination severity against regulatory criteria, and design effective site evaluation programs and contamination management strategies
- Conduct field work, including drilling, environmental sampling, and site inspections
- Conduct desktop reviews of historical site records, including air photos, reports, archive and records
- Maintain datasets, site documentation, and project records
- Prepare, review, and authenticate professional work products in full compliance with professional association standards (APEGA, AIA, etc.), City PMP/QMS, and Joint Practice Agreement Codes of Conduct
- Prioritize contaminated sites by balancing environmental risks, financial liabilities, legal exposure, land use, and public safety/reputation
- Procure external consulting services, evaluate RFPs/call-ups under Standing Arrangements, and manage project lifecycle elements, including scoping, cost estimation, schedule tracking, and budget
- Provide technical advice and pragmatic solutions for internal City departments across capital and operating projects, including asset construction and rehabilitation
- Perform professional peer reviews on land development applications to ensure regulatory compliance with the Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Municipal Government Act, and City bylaws
- Maintain active professional registration, fulfill continuous Professional Development Hour requirements, and apply current industry standards
- Prepare hazard assessments to enforce safety standards, and actively contribute to a positive, inclusive workplace culture
- Undergraduate Degree in Environmental Engineering, Geoscience, Civil Engineering, or related applied science discipline eligible for professional designation as detailed below
- Membership in one of the following professional associations, as required under the Joint Practice Standard for Professional Responsibilities in Completion and Assurance of Reclamation and Remediation Work in Alberta, is mandatory:
- Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Geol., P.L.)
- Alberta Institute of Agrologists (P.Ag., R.T.Ag.)
- Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (P.Bio.)
- Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta (P.Chem.)
- Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals in Alberta (P.Tech)
- Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals (RPF, RPFT)
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in the practice of contaminated site evaluation and management. In depth knowledge of all applicable environmental regulations and guidelines for contaminated sites.
Assets:
- Knowledge of the MGA, Public Sector Accounting Board Standards related to environmental liability, contract law, City of Edmonton standards, or methods of procurement
- Ability to see beyond the technical issues and predict a wide range of related impacts - social, political, operational
- Experience with GIS software, databases, borehole logging software, SAP, POSSE, or other enterprise project management, accounting, procurement, or document management software
- Experience working within a municipal or other institutional environment
- Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge and practical experience in contaminated site investigation and management
- Good working knowledge of the Alberta Contaminated Site Management Framework and related environmental legislation
- Strong time and project management skills
- Excellent data management and record keeping skills
- Knowledge and experience regarding risks associated with contaminants and contaminant sources
- Familiarity with chemical fate and transport of contaminants in soil, groundwater and surface water
- Knowledge and practical experience with environmental investigation and sampling methods
- Ability to translate complex technical data into timely recommendations for senior staff and clients, backed by strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
- Effectively manage consultant contracts, interdisciplinary teams, and multi-site portfolios using structured organizational workflows
- Excellent skills related to office productivity suites (Google Workspace/Microsoft Office)
- Actively engage, connect, and collaborate with diverse internal and external stakeholders to drive project alignment

Conditions of employment & work environment:
- Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary: $94,870.14 - $118,585.27 (Annually)
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
- Applicants will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
