Nestled in Edmonton's spectacular river valley, the Valley Zoo provides a natural setting to get up close with animals, connect with nature and learn how to conserve the planet for future generations.  Do you enjoy working outdoors in a professional, fast-paced team environment?  The Edmonton Valley Zoo is seeking part time staff (Labourer I) to provide maintenance and daily facility operations by performing semi-skilled manual labour activities. Work responsibilities will also include building animal enrichments, maintaining exhibit infrastructure, and supporting the Animal Care team.

What will you do?

  • Maintenance of the overall site and animal exhibit including landscape construction, grounds & turf maintenance, and fencing repairs
  • Special event and facility rental set up tasks
  • Maintenance of plants and shrubs etc.
  • Turf mowing and maintenance
  • Provide safety checks and inspections
  • Operate  summer season watering systems in the facility
  • Assist guests as needed
  • Move, install and maintain facility signage
  • Support the Animal Care team with delivery and removal of animal supplies and materials to designated animal enclosures
  • Utilize hand tools for digging and excavation tasks
  • Perform cleaning tasks such as washroom cleaning and maintenance, vacuuming, sweeping, or mopping floors and cleaning tables and chairs
  • Remove facility waste and walkway litter, transport, load and unload items using facility trucks, utility vehicles and golf carts
  • Provide security related tasks such as unlocking and locking doors, gates, and facility areas as needed
  • Complete minor repairs or assemble items required for zoo operations
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 10
  • Experience in operating various types of equipment and hand tools related to this position is preferred

Assets:

  • Experience with horticulture, agriculture, gardening and landscaping
  • Experience performing related duties
  • Horticulture diploma

Skills required for Success:

  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and to maintain required record keeping
  • Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and helpful manner
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the assigned tasks and duties of this position in all kinds of weather and environmental conditions, including allergens such as animals, dust, pollen and insects
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication, customer service, organization, time management and prioritization skills are required

Conditions of Employment:

  • Intermediate First Aid and CPR upon employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday availability is required

Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday

Salary: $24.416 - $33.470 (Hourly)
