In this position, you will work as part of the Center City team during the summer season and keep our active pathways and infrastructure clear throughout the winter. In the summer months, as part of the Horticulture team you will be involved in delivering and maintaining planters, small scale renovations such as shrub replacement and shrub bed improvements as well as watering annual flowers and new plantings. In the winter months, your skills will shift to support critical snow and ice management tasks. What will you do?

  • Work as a team to coordinate on site requirements
  • Perform snow and ice removal using both hand tools and equipment such as, but not limited to, Toolcats, MTs, and John Deere 1500 series tractors
  • Spread mulch on sites using both manual tools and equipment
  • Perform equipment servicing and maintenance of equipment
  • Operate a chainsaw to rejuvenate prune shrubs, participate in pruning activities
  • Plant annuals, weed annual beds manually and with hand tools
  • Maintain Shrub beds with reciprocator
  • Drive trucks and pull trailers
  • Complete simple work records such as Vehicle Pre-Trip Inspections, daily logs and FLHAs
  • Perform other related duties including redeployment to encampments, sanitation, horticulture or other areas as required
Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One (1) years of Horticulture and/or Snow and Ice experience

Asset:

  • Experience operating equipment and Internal certification on Toolcat, chainsaw and chipper operation

Skills required for success:

  • Equipment operation skills and equipment maintenance knowledge for various types of vehicles and machinery
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Standard First Aid Certification
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 100 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using feet/hand control, requiring physical stamina and resilience
  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, poor air quality and noise
  • Potential exposure to occupational hazards such as biohazards (bodily fluids, needles), chemicals, and aggressive domestic or wild animals
  • This role requires 24/7 availability as winter shifts cover weekdays, weekends, and both night and day shifts

Hours of Work: Various shifts, 40 hours per week. Overtime work may be required during peak operational periods

Salary Range: $25.935 - $34.208 (Hourly); $54,152.280 - $71,426.300 (Annually)
