The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated professional for a dual-role position as a Paving Operations Equipment Operator III in the summer and a Snow & Ice Control Labourer II in the winter. In the summer paving months, you will operate heavy equipment including pavers, rollers, grinders, sweepers, and loaders to maintain high-quality road infrastructure. As winter approaches, your focus will transition to Snow and Ice Control, where you will maintain active pathways, bus stops, river valley trails, and public facilities to ensure safe movement across our city. This dynamic role demands a strong commitment to safety, daily hazard assessments, and teamwork under shifting environmental conditions. You will play a vital part in maintaining our infrastructure to the standards set by City Council and our Asset Management Plans.

What will you do?

• Equipment Operator III ( Summer - Paving Operations)
  • Safely and skillfully operate heavy machinery such as Street Sweepers, Loaders (with 6-way blades, manhole cutters, buckets, and attachments), 8–20 Tonne Rollers and Airs, Pavers, Screeds, Grinders, and Kettles
  • Guide delivery trucks into pavers, manage paver speed, adjust screed levels and profiles to blend new asphalt mats seamlessly, and maintain specified compaction rolling patterns
  • Execute precise manhole cutting, sweep grinded/paved areas, operate top/bottom grinders to specified depths, and safely apply kettle sealant while maintaining proper heating temperatures
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, conduct minor preventative maintenance, complete daily work sheets, and report deficiencies through proper channels
  • Perform truck driving, litter control, and general manual tasks during periods when heavy equipment operation is not actively required
• Labourer II Duties (Winter – Snow and Ice Control)
  • Maintain public facilities, active pathways, river valley trails, bike lanes, stairs, bridge decks, parking lots, and bus stops
  • Perform manual labor including hand shoveling, ice chipping, sandbox replenishment, and operating light/small powered equipment (backpack blowers, snow throwers, power brooms, BCS brooms)
  • Operate equipment such as plow trucks, parking lot sanders (2-ton and below), John Deere tractors (4000/5000 series), Toolcats, Trackless MT-7s, and associated implements (buckets, brooms, blowers)
  • Assist with constructing outdoor rinks using water trucks or ice resurfacers as operationally required
  • Coach and mentor entry-level labourers, participate in daily tailgate safety talks, and maintain respectful communication with internal team members and members of the public

Qualifications

• Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
• Minimum of two (2) years of practical experience operating equipment related to paving operations

Skills required for success:

• Considerable knowledge of safe practices for operating and maintaining assigned equipment
• Proven experience operating specialized paving equipment (e.g., Sweepers, Pavers, Grinders ( Mid size and Large ) Rollers over 3 ton and Crack sealing Kettles)
• Experience operating winter equipment (Toolcats, Trackless MT-7, 4000/5000-series tractors, plow trucks)
• Safely and effectively operate 8-10 tonne rollers and 20 tonne air rollers under minimal supervision to execute a variety of tasks related to paving operations
• Demonstrated training or experience with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001/Enviso)
• Ensure the longevity of City assets through diligent daily maintenance and timely reporting of any equipment damage
• Ability to assist asphalt crew with the placement of asphaltic material including cold mix, hot mix, hot tar and mastic materials
• Physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual work, including the use of various hand tools and the placement of asphaltic materials
• Contribute to a respectful workplace by communicating effectively with crew members
• Commitment to a reporting culture by completing Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) and adhering to all OH&S Safety Standards and Policies
• Knowledge of PARS policies, procedures, and standards
• Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions

Conditions of Employment:

• Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence[with Air Brake Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
• Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
• Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
• Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
• Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

• The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
• The work occurs primarily outdoors with exposure to hot materials (asphalt/tar) and chemicals
• Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, poor air quality, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
• This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 100 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using feet/hand control, requiring physical stamina and resilience
• This role requires 24/7 availability, including weekends and nights, particularly for Snow and Ice Control operations
• Placement will be based on operational need, city-wide
• Ability to work day and night shifts or changing schedules as required by operational needs, working 8 to 10-hour shifts depending on area requirements
• Summer Operations will be North East Yard
• Winter Operations will be city wide based on operational need

• Labourer II: $25.935 - $34.208 (Hourly); $54,152.28 - $71,426.30 (Annually)
