Step into a critical, city-wide role where your technical expertise directly impacts the quality of Edmonton's landscapes. The Landscape Technician I will be the eyes and ears in the field, performing site inspections across diverse terrain, from areas being converted from maintained to naturalized to established natural areas.
Leveraging your knowledge in horticulture and IPM, you will translate detailed findings into actionable advice, compiling essential reports that directly drive operations planning and ensure compliance and quality for projects across the city.
What will you do?
- Perform regular field investigations of sites (pre- and post-planted) following established standards to provide recommendations of weed control and other vegetation management required
- Identify weeds on sites, suggest control prioritization and treatment options given the established standards
- Traverse sites city-wide across varied terrain (vehicle or on foot)
- Closely assess sites for work quality, condition, and control effectiveness
- Record findings in the field and compile detailed reports
- Utilize data management programs for recording/reporting, requiring high technical proficiency
- Communicate inspection data and site assessments to all stakeholders
- Provide expert advice (horticulture, IPM, natural area maintenance) to direct work, escalate issues, and assist in work plan development, working closely with the Landscape Services operations team and Naturalization Technical team
- Complete various additional tasks, including site marking, fielding requests, and general housekeeping
- Other related duties as assigned
- Completion of a two-year technical diploma, or higher level education in Landscape Technology, Horticulture, Forestry, or a related field
- Minimum of 2 years related work experience in field inspections, GIS mapping, herbicide application, weed control and identification or natural area maintenance
Assets:
- Alberta Pesticide Applicators License (Landscape, Industrial and/or Agricultural)
Skills required for success:
- Ability to perform accurate field inspections
- Knowledge of flora, both desirable and undesirable (weeds, invasive species)
- Knowledge of IPM, horticultural, maintenance, OH&S, WHMIS and general COE best practices
- Methods, materials, and equipment used in management of vegetation in both naturalized and established turf sites
- Attention to detail in recording information and preparing reports
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to use a variety of programs including Google suite (gmail, sheets, docs), ArcGIS
- Ability to communicate information effectively through various channels, both verbal and written
- Ability to interact with public safely and professionally, maintaining respect and a positive perspective of operations
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the work of this class

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls

- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
