Description

As an Urban Forest Technician, you will be a vital contributor to the health and vibrancy of Edmonton's urban canopy. You will work closely with Urban Foresters to support operational workplans through detailed field data collection and site inspections. Your day-to-day will involve monitoring the quality of tree maintenance activities and ensuring that our community's trees are well-cared for.

You will act as a key point of contact for the public, responding to inquiries and providing education on the importance of our urban forest. By coordinating specialized tree services and managing contract compliance, you ensure that our green infrastructure remains a pride of the City.

What will you do?

  • Collect essential field data including tree species, size, condition, and site characteristics to inform management decisions
  • Coordinate and monitor tree work such as planting, stump grinding, removals, and hydrovac performed by internal teams or contractors
  • Ensure all contractor activities adhere to safety standards and City specifications
  • Support ground disturbance preparation and execution for tree planting and related activities
  • Respond to 311 notifications, providing timely updates and clear messaging to residents regarding tree-related concerns
  • Update and maintain accurate records within GIS and SAP systems to track the progress of tree-related activities
Qualifications

  • Completion of a Diploma in Forestry or a related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the landscaping industry

Assets:

  • ISA Certified Arborist designation
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)
  • Project Management training
  • Specific experience in tree pruning, removals, or construction site coordination

Skills required for success:

  • Working knowledge of arboriculture techniques and practices
  • Proven experience with computer programs, including Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs) and GIS software
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with seasonal pressures
  • Excellent oral and written skills to express decisions clearly to community partners and collaborators
  • Ability to work independently on challenging construction sites and resolve tree conflicts using creative solutions
  • Strong tree identification skills and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations

Conditions of Employment:

  • Requirement to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to the respirator fit testing policy during poor air quality events
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • This position involves significant outdoor field work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and precipitation
  • The role requires physical activity such as standing, walking, and kneeling, as well as the ability to lift up to 10 lbs
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement
