The Painter I role involves surface preparation and application of protective and decorative coatings to various structures, including buildings, furniture, equipment, machinery, and signage. You will gain experience in all aspects of the painting trade, using a range of products to deliver painting and decorating services. You may also be responsible for overseeing helpers or apprentices.

What will you do?

  • Preparing surfaces through cleaning, steaming, removing old finishes, smoothing, and filling imperfections, utilizing tools like paint removers, sandblasters, and scrapers
  • Arranging and assembling ladders, scaffolding, and protective coverings to safeguard surrounding areas
  • Selecting, preparing, and applying paints or stains using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment
  • Covering walls and ceilings with decorative wallpaper or natural/synthetic fibers
  • Cleaning equipment and work areas
  • Applying special protective coatings
  • Provide daily progress updates to the Foreperson
  • Complete work orders on schedule and to a high standard
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Meet customer expectations and stay within budget
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Certified Alberta Journeyperson in the trade of Painter and Decorator
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a related field

Assets:

  • First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain
  • Confined Space Entry training
  • Aerial Work Platform training
  • Fall Arrest Training

Skills required for success:

  • Considerable knowledge of the properties of paint, lacquer and related finishes, correct proportions and proper techniques for mixing, blending, and applying paints and finishes to wood, metal and other materials
  • Possession of form perception to be able to observe application of coatings for proper thickness, smoothness, quality and to detect imperfections
  • Possession of spatial perception to achieve proper spacing, balance and artistic effect when laying out and painting letters and designs
  • Colour acuity of a high degree to mix paints to obtain desired colour or to match the exact shade of the original colour
  • Manual dexterity
  • Strong communication skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Hire is dependent upon an Enhanced Police clearance satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • This role requires the ability to work in various environments, including exposure to dust, noise and various weather conditions
  • Working in a variety of positions for an extended period of time, as well as the ability to work at various heights, is required
