Description

The Urban Planning and Economy Department is the delegated Development Authority for the City of Edmonton and is responsible for all land use duties and decision making for the public good as legislated by the Municipal Government Act. 

As a Planner within our department, you will process, review, and manage applications for property rezoning, amend statutory and non-statutory plans, and oversee the legal closure of roadways. Your role is essential in providing professional judgment and advisory services, both written and verbal, to City Councillors, department colleagues, civic administration, the development industry, lawyers, members of the public, and other external stakeholders. Additionally, you will be responsible for writing reports and compiling bylaw packages for presentation to the City Council.

What will you do?

  • Interpret relevant legislation, municipal policies, procedures, guidelines and best practices
  • Consult with technical stakeholders to collect and assemble relevant information and data
  • Negotiate with Applicants to amend, revise, and shape development proposals to achieve compliance with relevant plans, bylaws and regulations
  • Ensure that fair and transparent communications, consultations and engagements occur with the public and other external stakeholders; Make presentations; and Apply planning expertise, creativity, intelligence, problem solving and decision making skills to analyze and resolve planning issues and make recommendations regarding land use matters and the public interest
  • Manage timelines appropriately to deliver reports to City Council within departmental expectations and metrics
  • Apply communication and writing skills to produce high quality, accurate, informative and succinct technical reports to City Council
  • Apply organizational skills to assemble clear, coordinated, informative bylaw packages for delivery to City Council; and Ensure that public engagement and consultation materials are accurate and complete
  • Provide interpretive and educational services about planning and land use legislation and processes to members of the public, and other members of the civic administration
