Description
The Environment and Climate Resilience section is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer to provide expertise and leadership for achieving the City's environmental and climate resilience objectives. This critical role acts as the main interface for the City's ISO 14001 Certified Environmental Management System. Responsibilities include technical planning, operational program management, ensuring environmental compliance, and providing expert strategic advice to senior leadership. We require specialized knowledge in water resources, civil infrastructure, climate adaptation, and regulatory compliance.
What will you do?
- Implement and maintain the City's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System with a cohesive and integrated approach
- Identify, rank, and manage environmental aspects, compliance obligations, and risks through operational controls and emergency planning
- Act as the primary contact with external regulators (e.g., Alberta Environment) and ensure full compliance with all environmental legislation
- Monitor, measure, and analyze performance using key performance indicators, identify trends, and develop best practices
- Provide expert strategic advice and recommendations (e.g., business cases, technical memos) to senior leadership on complex environmental issues and opportunities
- Provide engineering oversight for outsourced environmental work, including contract management, supervision, and quality assurance
- Procure, review, and provide professional technical peer review and sign-off on authenticated engineering and scientific documents
- Facilitate integration and collaboration across departments to align City plans and resolve complex regulatory and project issues
- Oversee environmental investigations, track action plans, and support the auditing program to drive continual improvement
- Maintain professional registration and ethics, pursue continuous learning, and utilize creative approaches for innovative and cost-effective solutions
- Bachelor of Science in Environmental or Civil Engineering; or Bachelor of Science in Geology specializing in environmental science or hydrogeology
- Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, including 2 years in a leadership and/or management role within a large, complex unionized organization
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 and project management experience overseeing regulatory compliance for municipal infrastructure
- Experience in site characterization, remediation, and design/operation of water and wastewater and stormwater facilities
- Expertise is required in water resource management, climate adaptation, and municipal assets such as drainage, bridges, and roadways
Assets:
- Master's degree in a related field
- Additional certification or specialized training in areas such as risk management, GIS, public administration, urban planning, change management, leadership, or project management
- Professional designation(s) (for example P. Ag, P. Biol, P. Chem, QAES, or Wetland/Environmental Professional)
- Demonstrated ability to professionally authenticate Water Act regulatory documents compliant with the Alberta Wetland Policy

- Demonstrate excellent leadership, supervisory, and coaching skills, including the ability to delegate, empower team members, and manage performance development within an interdisciplinary team
- Possess strong verbal, written, and public speaking skills to effectively communicate with a wide range of internal and external technical and non-technical partners, including regulators and City Council
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships
- Work constructively as both a team member and leader, and use strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills to address complex issues
- Must be an effective change agent dedicated to achieving outcomes, demonstrating attention to detail, and utilizing proven project management skills to manage complex tasks and meet strict deadlines

Conditions of employment & work environment:
- Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary: $112,669.97 - $140,836.50 (Annually)
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
- The role may necessitate the use of personal transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
