Help keep Edmonton moving safely and efficiently! The City of Edmonton's Traffic Operations team seeks skilled and innovative engineers for pivotal roles as Traffic Signals Project Engineer and Traffic Systems Engineer. You will be instrumental in ensuring a safe, efficient, and accessible transportation network for all road users throughout our city.

Your expertise will drive key aspects of traffic management. This will range from the detailed design, engineering, and construction oversight of traffic signal projects across Edmonton to the comprehensive review, analysis, engineering, and operational oversight of our vital traffic signal and street lighting systems. You'll use your technical abilities to analyze traffic patterns, optimize signal timing, and implement innovative solutions that improve traffic flow and enhance safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike, including seamless integration with our LRT system. What will you do? 

  • Plan and oversee all aspects of projects, in order to meet the project goals on time and within budget using accepted engineering principles, practices, and design standards 
  • Create scopes of work and operational specifications professional work products associated with individual projects
  • Develop, prepare and/or review and authenticate engineering plans and designs for traffic signals and intersection controls 
  • Prepare functional specifications and create timing sheet for new traffic signal and traffic control equipment layouts 
  • Help identify and prioritize locations requiring construction improvements 
  • Review  traffic engineering studies and design plans for roadway projects relative to the traffic signal systems 
  • Analyze and assist with troubleshooting traffic operational issues by conducting traffic engineering analysis of the transportation system (e.g. traffic signal coordination, detour timing) 
  • Determine methods to improve traffic movement and conduct assessments to improve safety at signalized intersections, including field checks as required 
  • Conduct field surveys and assessments to determine functional requirements for new signals and signal upgrades (e.g. traffic count) which may be required to be scheduled outside of normal business hours
  • Review and prepare comprehensive responses to the inquiries received from the public, stakeholders, members of Council and the other City staff 
  • Project budgeting, cost and documentation management (conceptual budgets, estimate review, change orders and project close out)
  • Assist with procurement and contract management
  • Additional related duties as required
