Description

Bring your technical expertise and leadership skills to a dynamic team focused on shaping the future of Edmonton's growth. The Urban Planning and Economy department is looking for a dedicated professional to guide the technical design of transportation infrastructure projects from concept to completion.

As an Engineering Technologist III, you will provide leadership and expert technical support for engineering drawing reviews within the Development Services branch. You will lead the section in evaluating designs for urban freeways, arterials, collectors, and neighborhood roadways to ensure safe, efficient, and innovative transportation networks. A key component of this role involves mentoring, training, and motivating technical staff and members-in-training to foster engineering best practices.

What will you do?

  • Coordinate, review, and provide recommendations on engineering drawings submitted for land developments, civic departments, and external partners
  • Ensure submitted designs strictly comply with City Standards, Bylaws, Policies, and Servicing Plans
  • Act as a premier technical resource for internal and external collaborators to resolve complex transportation design challenges
  • Document and formally justify technical recommendations for accepting or rejecting non-standard proposals
  • Train, mentor, and track the progress of design staff (Tech I and Tech II) to build technical capacity and ensure timely deliverables
  • Conduct in-field design reviews to provide actionable recommendations for issues encountered on-site during construction
  • Manage section workflows and utilize Google Workspace tools to analyze productivity and maintain accurate unit records
  • Provide direct assistance to other City units to update, amend, and modernize City design standards as new technologies emerge
Qualifications

  • Completion of a Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized Institute of Technology
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in transportation design within a municipal environment
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation with the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET) or equivalent

Assets:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an active mentoring and/or supervisory role
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design software, specifically AutoCAD

Skills required for success:

  • Deep engineering expertise in transportation design for local, collector, and arterial roadways
  • Thorough understanding of municipal land development and subdivision processes
  • Masterful verbal and written communication skills tailored for technical reporting, documentation, and presentations
  • Advanced problem-solving skills to evaluate complex technical issues and recommend tactful, strategic solutions
  • High customer service orientation with the capability to think strategically to hit corporate and unit targets
  • Exceptional workload management skills to execute multiple assignments with minimal supervision under tight timelines
  • Highly collaborative approach to building positive relationships and managing change within a diverse team environment
  • Effective coaching, interviewing, and conflict resolution skills to inspire and motivate team deliverables

Conditions of Employment:

  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen, and coveralls
