As a Truck Driver III / Labourer I, you'll be on the front lines of our city's operations—from maintaining critical infrastructure to ensuring our roads and sidewalks are safe through the winter months and transitioning to spring sweep activities in early spring. What will you do?

Labourer I 

  • Perform heavy manual work with the use of hand tools 
  • Operate vehicles transporting materials and supplies and direct traffic during street construction projects 
  • Load and unload materials from trucks 
  • Dig holes and trenches 
  • Manually sweep and apply traction aids to sidewalks and refill sand dispensers 
  • Perform general housekeeping duties on yardsites 
  • Remove snow around bridges, sidewalks, stairways and approaches and sand slippery sidewalks and crosswalks 
  • Assist tradespeople in general building maintenance and construction 
  • Manually/Mechanically sweep sand and debris off of sidewalks, boulevards, etc
  • Perform other related duties as required 

Truck Driver III 

  • Operate and care for a tandem or single axle sand/plow while engaged in snow and ice control 
  • Be aware of obstacles adjacent to the road to avoid damage to Public Property when operating plow, including snow off the wing
  • Deliver people, materials, equipment or parts to field crews, load and move equipment between work sites and pick up parts and materials from vendors, warehouses and/or City stockyards 
  • Load and unload materials manually and/or with the assistance of a power tailgate or lift 
  • Perform routine maintenance duties, such as cleaning the truck box and worksite and performing routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment
  • Inform the lead hand of any on-the-road issues with equipment or observed accident or property damage 
  • Perform other duties related to snow and ice control
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 10 or higher
  • Training or experience on sander/plow
  • First Aid Certification

Assets: 

  • Experience in mechanical walk clearing
  • Experience in hand work, including snow clearing
  • City of Edmonton Sander/Plow Training

Skills required for Success:

  • Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner, including detecting minor defects in equipment as needed 
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions

Conditions of Employment:

  • In order to maintain good standing with the City of Edmonton successful candidates are expected to complete the tenure of this posting until June 1, 2027, unless a prior written agreement is made
  • Current and valid Alberta Class 3 Driver's Licence with Air Brake Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's Permit is a requirement of this position 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a city class D permit
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work a 12 hours rotating shift 
  • 24 hour, 7 day coverage, including weekends and night shifts
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform heavy manual labour, including lifting up to 50 lbs, for extended periods of time, in various environmental and weather conditions

Salary Range: 

  • Labourer I: $24.416 - $33.470 (Hourly)
  • Truck Driver III: $34.987 (Hourly)
