Job Description

Under the general direction of the Director-Financial Reporting, the Senior Accountant has professional responsibility in collecting, analyzing, interpreting, validating, reconciling, and reporting internal and external financial data.  The Senior Accountant is responsible for assigned tasks for month-end close, year-end close, ad-hoc reporting, audit schedules, analyses, the preparation of assigned financial statement work papers, and the completion of the Annual Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Finance Survey. This position will also apply policies and procedures, perform complicated analysis, identify discrepancies, resolve issues, develop job aids and report unresolved issues to the Director. The Senior Accountant has professional responsibility to ensure compliance with the applicable NSHE policies and procedures, GAAP, GASB and IRS regulations.

This position requires consistent and reliable attendance, some travel to other campuses/work sites and evening/weekend work, particularly during peak accounting and reporting cycles.

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Perform general ledger accounting
  • Analyze, interpret, validate, and reconcile financial data
  • Complete tasks assigned for annual and ad hoc reports
  • Prepare and review transactions, journals, and audit schedules
  • Complete tasks assigned for month-end close and year-end close
  • Research and apply policies and procedures in compliance with accounting standards, GASB reporting guidelines, and NSHE policy and procedures
  • Develop and update institutional practice guidelines based on IRS regulations applicable to the College
  • Collect information and serve as NSHE payroll liaison for reportable income
  • Review and report 1042S to NSHE
  • Research/collect information, prepare workpapers and prepare Unrelated Business Income (UBI) report
  • Research/collect information, prepare workpapers and input data to IPEDS
  • Utilize Workday, Peoplesoft and Excel (including pivot tables)

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to perform accurate and detailed accounting tasks
  • Knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams (or other virtual work environment platforms)
  • Ability to meet deadlines under strict time constraints
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to elicit, organize, and translate data
  • Ability to work with a diverse and multicultural work force
  • Ability to master new software applications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or closely related field from a regionally accredited college/university OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of full-time working experience in accounting, including reconciling, analyzing, and reporting financial data

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Three or more years of full-time ledger accountant experience
  • One or more years of professional accounting experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience in research and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or the standards of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)

Starting Salary Range

Administrative Faculty C

The minimum starting salary is $67,256.00. The successful candidate may be placed above the minimum of the range based on education and experience.
