A Day in the Life of an Environmental Services Technician

This role involves maintaining and ensuring a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within the healthcare facility. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining cleaning equipment, adherence to strict safety and sanitation protocols, and managing multiple cleaning tasks simultaneously. Environmental Services Technicians are crucial in preventing infections through meticulous cleanliness while effectively communicating with other departments to coordinate activities. Expect a role that requires flexibility and problem-solving skills, often in high-stress situations to support both the staff and visitors' well-being.

Environmental Services Technician Position Summary

The Environmental Services Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment throughout the healthcare facility, with a primary focus on hard and soft floor surfaces, upholstered furniture, and general environmental cleanliness. This position ensures proper care and routine maintenance of floor care equipment, follows infection prevention and hazardous waste handling protocols, and responds to facility work tickets in alignment with established environmental services (EVS) processes and procedures. Through effective communication and attention to detail, the Environmental Services Technician supports the healthcare team in delivering a high standard of patient care.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in environmental services, custodial work, or floor maintenance in a healthcare setting preferred
  • Familiarity with infection prevention protocols and hazardous waste handling is beneficial
Special Skills & Aptitudes
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and safe chemical handling practices
  • Ability to identify and utilize appropriate resources when addressing concerns or equipment issues
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow infection control protocols
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with healthcare staff, patients, and visitors
  • Ability to operate and maintain specialized floor care equipment, including buffers, extractors, and vacuums
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding patient privacy standards
Essential Responsibilities
  1. Floor & Upholstery Maintenance

    • Maintain all hard and soft floor surfaces, including stripping, waxing, buffing, and carpet cleaning
    • Ensure proper care of upholstered furniture, including spot cleaning and routine maintenance
  2. Equipment Maintenance & Operation

    • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of floor care equipment to ensure operational efficiency
    • Properly store and handle all cleaning supplies and equipment per safety guidelines
  3. Infection Prevention & Safety Compliance

    • Follow all infection prevention protocols, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste
    • Ensure compliance with all hospital, state, and federal regulations related to environmental cleanliness
  4. Work Ticket & Facility Response

    • Respond to facility-wide work tickets and prioritize tasks based on urgency and EVS processes
    • Document completed work and communicate any unresolved issues to the appropriate team members
  5. Communication & Collaboration

    • Maintain clear and professional communication with the healthcare team, patients, and visitors
    • Recognize the impact of environmental cleanliness on patient care and experience
Performance Review Standards
  • Quality of Work: Floors and furniture are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and appearance
  • Equipment Care: Floor care equipment is well-maintained and used safely and effectively
  • Compliance & Safety: All infection control and hazardous waste handling procedures are strictly followed
  • Response Efficiency: Work tickets are addressed in a timely and organized manner per EVS protocols
  • Communication & Teamwork: Demonstrates professionalism and collaboration in all interactions


Qualifications

Education and Experience Required
  • Experience in interim and restorative level floor care to include stripping and waxing, grout cleaning, carpet extraction, carpet spotting, etc
  • Minimum 3 years prior experience working in a healthcare facility in an environmental services or housekeeping position and/or experience using janitorial equipment
  • Able to follow written and oral instructions, interact with all members of the healthcare team, and respond appropriately to all requests
  • Must have sufficient reading ability to read instructions and chemical product labels and fill out maintenance request
Preferred
  • High School education

The pay range is listed above. Actual pay rate offered is determined based on experience in this role. Please be sure to include all applicable experience in your application.
