Essential Duties

· Assessment

a. Records and evaluates staffing patterns for all inpatient nursing units each shift.

b. Observes the general shift operations for the presence of or potential for problem situations in the physical and emotional environment.

· Diagnosis/Problem Identification

a. Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration in data analysis and decision making processes.

· Identification of Outcomes

a. Directs, maintains, and evaluates processes that promote Relationship Based Care and desired patient-centered outcomes that are culturally sensitive and inclusive of patient/family needs according to accepted standards of clinical nursing practice.

b. Assists in the utilization of the PCSS database to ensure appropriate staffing ratios.

c. Promotes the integration of clinical, human resource, and financial data to support decision-making.

· Planning

a. Supports organizational and Unit Action Council plans related to the delivery of unit based nursing services and patient care.

b. Develops and implements goals and objectives annually in concert with the Administrative goals. Reviews and reports on progress quarterly and revises as necessary.

c. Evaluates need for immediate intervention in family crisis situations and Medical Social Work involvement when available.

· Implementation

a. Facilitates staff participation in decision-making as it relates to the specification of resources necessary for implementation of patient care.

b. Assures the proper disposition of the deceased; notifies the Medical Examiner per protocol.

c. Assists in scheduling surgical cases and outpatient medical procedure cases.

d. Assists Admitting Representatives with the placement and/or transfer of patients.

e. Assists Environmental Services in arranging the cleaning of late discharged patient's rooms.

f. Facilitates the process for Work Injuries, For Cause Drug testing and Exposures.

· Evaluation

a. Evaluates the general shift operations for the presence of or potential for problem situation in the physical and emotional environment.

· Quality of Care and Administrative Practice

a. Embraces and supports Relationship Based Care and the performance improvement philosophy of Munson Medical Center.

b. Provides leadership in establishing a culture of safety. Recognizes and reports any occurrences which might result in liability of the hospital.

c. Supports a shared governance philosophy throughout nursing.

d. Demonstrates initiative and judgment in adapting or devising solutions to meet emergency or unusual conditions.

e. Identifies, investigates, and intervenes as appropriate when problem situations or complaints arise.

f. Consults the On-call Administrator as necessary and communicates pertinent information to the Admission Manager and/or the appropriate manager and/or Director.

g. Provides leadership and direction with the interpretation, application, and enforcement of operating policies and procedures and professional standards.

h. Acts as a professional role model and consultant in health care issues.

i. Promotes staff development of clinical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

j. Accountable for utilizing resources appropriately, maintaining the integrity of each unit's budget.

k. Demonstrates proficiency with systems used to determine staffing efficiencies.

· Performance Appraisal

a. Evaluates own performance based on professional practice standards, relevant statutes and regulations, and organizational criteria.

b. Identifies areas of strength as well as areas for professional/practice development.

c. Available to assist managers in the evaluation of staff performance.

d. Is knowledgeable about and ensures fair and consistent application of personnel policies.

· Education

a. Assesses and maintains position competencies through a combination of self directed learning activities that include but are not limited to continuing education, participation in professional organizations, teaching, and mentoring activities.

b. Seeks additional knowledge and skills appropriate to the practice setting by developing and/or participating in educational programs and activities, conferences, workshops, and self-directed learning.

· Professional Environment

a. Assist in development and/or implementation of performance improvement programs and services.

b. Assists managers and staff in interpreting/understanding hospital programs.

c. Develops and implements goals and objectives annually in concert with the administrative goals. Reviews and reports on progress quarterly and revises as necessary.
