Job Summary: Oversees evening laboratory operations, managing day-to-day functions across multiple sub-departments including Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, and core lab services (STAT Lab, specimen receiving/processing, and send-outs). Plans, directs, and coordinates workflow to ensure efficient operations. Supervises staff to optimize performance, maintain quality standards, and minimize overtime.

Job Essentials:

  1. Directs the work of 20+ laboratory employees in the daily interdepartmental assignments relative to workflow.
  2. Discusses with superior department objectives, work plans, organization, staffing, work methods, and performance standards.
  3. Performs the job duties of employees supervised as required by staffing shortages or workloads.
  4. Recommends or assists superiors in determining action as to hiring, transfers, promotions, terminations, performance appraisals, salary adjustments, overtime, discipline, vacations, time off, and other personnel actions. Communicates, interprets, and discusses hospital and departmental policies and procedures with employees.  Hears and resolves employee grievances or refers to higher authority.
  5. Supervises and reviews quality control records and accuracy of procedures in assigned sections; evaluates results; reviews the work of subordinates and their recording of test results.  Conducts periodic checks of equipment, reagents, stains, etc.  Reviews work completed on unsupervised shifts.  Checks work list status in computer to make sure all work is complete or accounted for.
  6. Orients and trains or supervises the training of new personnel in the use of equipment and instructs in job duties.  Maintains the highest standard of safety at all times.
  7. Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures, ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging for service and repair. 
  8. Supervises and reviews quality control records and accuracy of procedurs in assigned sections; evaluates results; reviews the work of subordinates and their recording of test results. Conducts periodic checks of equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Checks work list status in computer to make sure all work is complete or accounted for. 
  9. Assists in the selection, testing, development and implementation of new procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  10. Assures adequate levels of laboratory supplies and equipment. Requests replacement supplies as needed in a timely manner.
  11. Compiles a monthly statistical report of tests performed in section.
  12. Performs administrative functions. Provides oversight and approval of departmental payroll and pay rule practices and compiles monthly statistical reports for the laboratory section.
  13. Assesses accuracy and validity of obtained test results by applying knowledge of relevant scientific principles; correlates clinical information and recognizes changes that are critical to patient care, identifies probable causes for irregular and atypical findings. Confers with superior about unusual test results and other issues.
  14. Interprets data and answers questions from physicians, nurses, and staff concerning test requirements, results, or specimen handling. 
  15. Maintains open communication with supervisors, pathologists, and fellow employees to ensure optimal operation of department. Communicated pertinent information to other members of the health care in a clinically relevant time frame to enhance the lab's contribution to patient care. 
  16. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. 
  17. Supervise direct reporting staff according to the policies of the Medical Center.
  18. Monitor, evaluate and manage staff performance including performance reviews.
  19. Meets regulatory and annual health assessment requirements. 
  20. Coach and discipline staff; manage internal staff relations.
  21. Displays a professional courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community and nurtures same in staff. 
  22. Maintains high standards of service excellence in all interactions with patients, physicians, other departments and co-workers.
  23. Performs other duties as required by the department. 

 

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree (B.S.)
  • 3 or more years experience as a technologist with proven leadership skills.

License/Certification/Registry:

  • ASCP (American Association of Clinical Pathologist) certification (required).

The rate of pay for each position will be determined based on a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, qualifications, skills, etc. The minimum rate does not include bonuses/incentives, differential pay or other forms of compensation. In addition to the minimum rate, eligible employees may receive comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other wellness resources.

Pay Range: $83,000.00
