Description

Position/PCN: Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic

Position FTE: 1.0

Pay Grade: 12

Starting Wage: $23.53

Days Per Year: 260

Shift hours: TBD
  Class Summary: Under limited supervision performs a variety of repair and maintenance functions on diesel and gas powered light and heavy equipment to ensure continual operations of District Vehicles and other related equipment.  Maintains extensive records on repair, servicing, and inspections as required by federal and state law. 
 
Distinguishing Characteristics: 
  Duty No. Essential Duties Frequency 1 Troubleshoots vehicles and related equipment (e.g. generators) to identify problem areas and determine if repair and replacement of parts is/are necessary. Daily 20% 2 Performs necessary repairs and maintenance procedures on District diesel/gas powered equipment (e.g., light, and heavy trucks, loaders, graders, farm tractors, and generators) as required.  Installs required parts and/or equipment. Daily 25% 3 Assists in maintaining Vehicle Maintenance supplies and orders parts/inventory as necessary. Daily 5% 4 Trains custodians on the proper use and functions of the grounds tractor and associated attachments. Daily 5% 5 Performs routine oil and filter changes to include lubrication and tire changes on all District vehicles. Daily 15% 6 Maintains, completes PMs, and repairs District grounds maintenance equipment.  Changes over snow blowers and plows to mowing decks on grounds equipment.  Maintains and repairs small engines on grounds equipment.  Weekly 25% 7 Maintains records and performs data entry utilizing computerized work order systems.  Daily 5% 8 May be required to perform additional duties which result from the Facility Department's workload and//or work assigned by the Supervisor, and/or their designee. As Needed    
Knowledge:   Vehicle mechanics and basic computer skills. 
 
Training and Experience (position requirements at entry): Previous education, two (2) years of technical training, work or life experience which provides evidence of the successful completion of the various tasks listed.  Such experience may be evidenced by five (5+) years of vehicle technician performing a variety of minor repairs on different vehicle types (e.g. light and heavy duty trucks plus construction equipment).  Perform diagnostics on various types of vehicles.
 
Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry): High school graduate or equivalent. Valid Alaskan Driver's License, CDL preferred.  Welding and cutting torch experience preferred. ASE Certification preferred.
 
Physical Requirements: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
