General Summary The primary function of Application Engineering at Gibson Engineering are accomplished by working independently or with a team to solve customer problems through the specification of automation solutions. This role will include solving new challenges and supporting existing solutions and customers. Delivering technical presentations of concepts, solutions, and training materials directly to customers or the sales team is frequently required. The support tasks often include hands-on proof of concept and technical demonstrations of hardware and software developed in various programming environments. Application engineers are expected to think on their feet, roll up their sleeves, and dive into technical challenges without hesitation. Managing multiple ongoing projects ranging from machine vision evaluations or robotic simulations will be required. This position requires consistent, timely, and effective communication with peers, managers, salespeople, and directly with customers. All engineering positions at Gibson Engineering include providing technical support, both internal and external. Educating our customers in a one-on-one, classroom, or presentation environment will be required. Essential Job Functions
- Effectively and creatively apply technology and products that Gibson Engineering represents to solve or help troubleshoot problems as presented.
- Perform technical feasibility and proof of concept work to establish confidence or rule out potential solutions.
- Help sales engineers identify all requirements to generate detailed quotations or estimates for specific products or multi-discipline solutions while working with manufacturer's support resources when necessary.
- Configure, program, and debug various automation equipment and systems. This includes but is not limited to PLCs, HMIs, motion controls (Servo, Stepper, VFD), robotics, data collection, and vision systems.
- Regularly communicate the status and expectations of ongoing support efforts to management, salespeople, or end customers.
- Provide engineering support for customers, internal staff, and sales engineers at Gibson or at customer locations for both engineered solutions or technical products.
- Provide customer education one to one, to a small group, or in a classroom environment as a subject matter expert.
- Regularly perform vision application evaluations consistency with deliverables provided by the vision application engineers at Gibson Engineering.
- Understand importance of commercial opportunities, track open projects, and effectively adjust priorities and independently manage time when not otherwise advised by management.
- Support turnkey engineering projects pre and post sales including concept development,
- programming, testing, debugging, or commissioning value-added jobs when necessary.
- Provide general technical support and guidance to sales engineers, customers, and other internal co-workers when requested.
- Monitor and participate in tech support email and hotline requests as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering discipline or 3-5 years in a technical or engineering support role.
- Strong computer skills (email, word processing, spreadsheets)
- Familiarity with industrial control systems, including but not limited to PLC, HMI, Machine Vision, and motion control products, is a plus.
- Working knowledge of 2D & 3D CAD systems and the ability to read electrical schematics and understand mechanical drawings, is a plus
- Work will require travel to customer locations throughout the northeast. Primary customer coverage areas will be Long Island, Metro NY, NJ, MD, DE, and Eastern PA.
- Work may involve periodic travel to vendors throughout the US for specialized training and regular regional travel to support customers and engineered solutions.
- Some evening and weekend work may be required to meet deadlines.
