The Lead Designer is responsible for the design & drafting of complex chassis components, assemblies and finished products for military and commercial trailer customers. Creates and edits part, assembly, installation and other drawings and associated bills of material. Interfaces frequently with engineers, other designers and manufacturing teammates. Provides guidance to designers and senior designers. Proactively leads continuous improvement initiatives. Effectively influences others.

Essential Duties:

  • Supports the department by creating a variety of complex mechanical/electrical/electronic designs for new product parts, subassemblies, assemblies, or systems configurations using CAD or manual systems
  • Compiles / prepares Bills of Materials and specifications
  • Contributes to and drives compliance with engineering playbook including modeling and drafting standards
  • Assists in the assembly of prototypes drawing multiple views; depicting relationship of component and parts; identifying dimensions, angles, curvatures, tolerances, and materials
  • Creates documentation required and processes Engineering Change Orders
  • Ensures adherence to designated quality and cost parameters; using CAD systems
  • Ensures quality of drawings and functionality of equipment by assisting in the building/acquiring of prototypes; testing and analyzing results; making various calculations, such as strength of materials, weights, simple forces, and stresses, frequently using charts and tables;
  • Analyzes the effect of proposed changes for proper fit and/or interference problems
  • Recommends possible solutions or alternate construction
  • Modifies drawings as required; conferring with engineers to resolve issues
  • Provides assistance to lesser experienced drafters by communicating work priorities; providing technical assistance; verifying accuracy of work
  • Maintains CAD equipment by following manufacturer's instruction and procedures; performing preventive maintenance and calling for repairs, as required
  • Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related results in a cooperative and supportive manner
  • Distributes work to drafting resources
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Adheres to all quality and safety standards
  • Supports other projects and performs duties as assigned

Education/Experience/Other Skills & Abilities:

  • Associates degree required in related field or equivalent experience; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Successful track record as a senior designer or equivalent.
  •  6+ years minimum using SolidWorks software.
  • Experience with three or more CAD programs
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills
  • Possesses quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of materials, manufacturing techniques and military standards
  • Possesses demonstrated skill using Solid Works computer aided drafting
  • Working knowledge of SAP business enterprise system for Bills of Materials strongly desired
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with customers, vendors, employees and managers at all levels within the company
  • Possesses strong computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in standard business software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office)
