Description

We are currently seeking a Director of Architecture to join our team.  As a Director of Architecture, you will be responsible for directing the architecture practice in collaboration with Design Principal. 

Leadership

  • Provide strategic vision, as well as day-to-day administration of the architecture group.
  • Responsible for development and successful execution of practice goals, business plan and profitability; aligns efforts with regional business unit plans and goals.
  • Supports the architectural practice's project management efforts and promotes technical expertise.
  • Supervises and may assist with the production of drawings and documents that convey the design intent.  Ensures delivery of quality technical documentation.
  • Utilizes and encourages best uses of design technology for presentation and production purposes; champions BIM and Revit technologies.
  • Implements and utilizes HOK standards for all projects and processes.
  • Assists in preparing fee and workload projections for assigned projects.
  • Works closely with project managers with respect to budget and schedule constraints.
  • Assists others with project deadlines as available.
  • Maintains an appropriate billable and non-billable percentage of personal and departmental time.
  • Conducts project technical and design reviews.
  • Supports diversity, HOKU programs and develops continuing education opportunities (e.g. site visits, lectures, road trips) to expose staff to influences which will stimulate creativity and innovation.
  • Takes personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.
  • Fosters a culture of external and internal client service.

Management

  • Works closely with Design Principal to ensure design intent is carried throughout project.  May assume duties of the Design Director in business units when this position is vacant:
    • Responsible for conceptual design excellence; initiates project design concepts and idea discussions, provides guidance to design teams during project design development.
    • Conducts research and seeks thorough understanding of client needs for project requirements and design solution opportunities.
    • Engages clients in explorations that respectfully challenge their understanding of appropriate design solutions.
    • Communicates design intent in a clear and compelling way; demonstrates the incorporation of client's requirements and goals within design solution.
    • Assists in the preparation and delivery of design presentations to clients and drives consultant work to achieve design goals.

Staff Development

  • Encourages staff exploration and innovation to achieve project technical excellence and continual improvement.
  • Acts as mentor by coaching and motivating teams and individuals; fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust among members of the group as it grows and develops.
  • Prepares and delivers staff evaluations; responsible for performance development, compensation decision-making and allocation processes of department.
  • Participates in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.

Business Development

  • Responsible for the development and execution of the regional business unit and managing the business unit's  marketing strategy; as well as the overall branding and development of HOK's practice.
  • Identifies new business opportunities while developing current client relationships.  Listen for and seek out new projects which may exist or are being formulated.
  • Participates in selected marketing and business development opportunities.
  • Develops and nurtures positive client relationships.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with consultants, contractors and jurisdictional/approval agencies to increase stature in the market and community resulting in increased potential business opportunities.
  • Assists marketing department in development of marketing campaigns, materials, webinars, etc. and overall proposal preparation.
  • Assists in preparation of award submittals.
  • Assists in the preparation of press releases and other materials publicizing assigned projects.
  • Participates in local or state professional associations, maintains active membership, and attends conferences valued by clients as appropriate. Public speaking and/or publishing may be required.
Required Skills
  • Significant talent in design, delivery, and project leadership.
  • Mastery of the concepts of Building Science required.
  • Ability to convince prospective clients that they should retain the services of the firm.
  • Evidence of strong working relationships with clients.
  • Proven ability to prioritize own work and the work of others in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients.
  • Capable of conceptual thinking as well as expediting plans through the approval process.
  • Demonstration of a polished presence and ability to move comfortably in business circles.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to make presentations and facilitate discussions.
  • Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, and budgets.
  • Knowledge about sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of buildingSMART, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Integrated Project Delivery (IDP).
  • Proficiency in all the basic architectural technical skills including computer skills such as:
    • Proficiency in Deltek Vision preferred.
    • Proficiency in MS Project or Primavera preferred.
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite required.
    • Proficiency in Newforma preferred.
    • Knowledge of Revit and BIM is required.
    • Knowledge of AutoCAD is required.
    • Basic knowledge of 3D Modeling software such as Rhino, Sketchup, preferred.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or equivalent in education or experience required.  Master's degree preferred.
  • 15 years of experience, with at least 10 years as a lead project architect or designer.
  • Published and/or award winning projects a plus.
  • Licensed Architect with current registration in your region required, if licensure is offered in your region.
  • NCARB registration preferred.
  • LEED accreditation or Green Associate preferred.

Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, education and location.  The reasonably expected annual salary range for this position is $180,000 to $220,000.
