PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

  • To develop and over see the implementation of an industry leading production swine well- being program that ensures the company's production process satisfy the needs and demands of our animals, employees, and external customers. These processes include, but are not limited to , swine well-being on farm and during transport, as well as processes that ensure a safe and quality product for our customers. This is a senior level position within the company and he/she will be involved in the management, leadership and strategy within the organization. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to ISF animal wellbeing policy at all times and partnering with Production Well- being team when incident occurs. 
  • Adhere to ISF bio-security policy at all times and helping identify procedure gaps.
  • Adhere to ISF safety policies and procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment (PPE) for appropriate tasks and work in a safe manner. 
  • Responsible for the development of an industry- leading Production swine well-being program that meets all the requirements of our internal and external customers. This includes monitoring, evaluating, and continuously improving these processes on farm and during transportation. 
  • Oversee the PQA Plus and TQA certification program for employees and contractors. 
  • Responsible for transparent communication with our primary packer customers and their customers. 
  • Coordinate activities of our Swine Well- Being Advisory committee compromised of academic and industry production experts, by leading and organizing regular meetings to obtain input on our Production Well- Being Program. 
  • Develop training materials that assist in the development and education of employees and contractors around the proper implementation of ISF bio-security protocols.
  • Actively train farm staff, support departments, and contractors to carry out biosecurity procedures appropriately. 
  • Enhance the culture of biosecurity through all segments of production and ISF departments be engaging teams and effective routine communication. 
  • Lead a team in monitoring and reporting compliance of biosecurity processes through biosecurity assessments, video monitoring and breach logs. 
  • Lead a team of supervisors that provides oversight and guidance to our independent contract crews. This includes supervision of vaccination crews, load- out crews, and truck wash crews. 
  • Provide input on the business processes and strategy to improve performance and cost efficiency as well as aid in the development of future business strategy. 
  • Support production in achieving goals and assist in multiplication, sow, nursery, and finishing teams with maintaining and improving production well-being and regulatory SOPs.
  • Serve as a technical resource for production management staff. 
  • Maintain active involvement in key programs of the National Pork Producers Council, the National Pork Board and other associated societies and promote further R&D efforts for innovative production practices. 
  • Ability to work across cross-functional teams. 
  • Collaborate with other departments within the company.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keep department, daily tasks, paperwork and people organized.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is performed indoors.
  • This job operates in an office that is climate controlled and includes hazards typical to that environment. 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.  
  • The environment you will be working in may have nuisance levels of gases and dust, particularly in the winter months
  • The environment of this position will change daily pending weekly schedule.
  • This position may require some tasks to be performed in extreme outside weather conditions.
  • This position will have duties in all facilities of Iowa Select Farms so employees will need to be comfortable working in and being exposed to all facility environments.  
  • Occasional visits to farm sites following all biosecurity protocols

 

PHYSICALITY REQUIREMENTS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
  • Ability to read and write.   
  • Ability to lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.          
  • The employee must have the ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds along with climbing up ladders and over gates.
  • The employee must be able to continuously repeat necessary movements such as bending, lifting and different hand movements as needed to complete tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds along with climbing up ladders and over gates.
  • Direct contact with animals may occur, so company bio-security practices must be understood and always practiced.  

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • This is a full-time position that will typically require at least 40 hours a week.
  • Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges. 
  • Occasional evening hours and weekend work may be required as the job duties demand. 
  • This is a full-time position with the expected days of Monday-Friday

 

TRAVEL

  • Local travel will be required for this position through the utilization of a company vehicle. 
  • Occasional overnight travel might be required for necessary events that pertain to this position. 
  • Travel is expected to various Iowa Select Farms facilities which may be local and out-of-area with little to no overnight travel through the utilization of a company provided vehicle.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and OTHER QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, with fluency in both written and verbal communication is preferred
  • Education/ Experience: 
  • MS or Doctorate in Animal Science or related field required.
  • 5+ years of experience in swine production or related experience 
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
