PURPOSE OF POSITION:
- The Director of Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive and effective safety program that promotes a culture of safety throughout the organization. This program will encompass safety procedures, training, auditing, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safety Program Development and Implementation:
- Design, implement, and manage a company-wide safety program in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA standards.
- Regularly review and update safety policies and procedures to reflect current regulations and industry best practices.
- Incident Investigation and Risk Mitigation:
- Lead thorough investigations of accidents and near-miss incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Prepare necessary documentation and evidence for use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Safety Audits and Compliance:
- Conduct annual safety audits of each site to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Recommend and oversee the implementation of corrective or preventive measures to address identified risks.
- Training and Development:
- Develop and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for new and existing employees, ensuring all required certifications are maintained.
- Ensure training programs are up-to-date and compliant with OSHA regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance and Record-Keeping:
- Maintain and audit CDL driver DOT files to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Perform annual motor vehicle records checks on all company drivers to minimize risk.
- Ensure compliance with state, local and federal safety and accident reporting requirements including maintain OSHA logs.
- Leadership and Collaboration:
- Influence and guide employees at all levels to foster a culture of safety and compliance.
- Collaborate with other departments to integrate safety protocols into all aspects of operations.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and advancements in safety technology.
- Implement innovative solutions to enhance workplace safety and efficiency.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- No direct supervisory responsibilities for this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
- The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.
- The environment of this position will change daily pending weekly schedule.
- This position may require some tasks to be performed in extreme outside weather conditions.
- This position will have duties in all facilities of Iowa Select Farms so employees will need to be comfortable working in and being exposed to all facility environments.
- Occasional visits to farm sites following all biosecurity protocols
PHYSICALITY REQUIREMENTS
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
- Ability to read and write.
- The employee must have the ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds along with climbing up ladders and over gates.
- The employee must be able to continuously repeat necessary movements such as bending, lifting and different hand movements as needed to complete tasks.
- Direct contact with animals may occur, so company bio-security practices must be understood and always practiced.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
- This is a full-time position that will typically require at least 40 hours a week.
- Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges.
- Occasional evening hours and weekend work may be required as the job duties demand.
- This is a full-time position with the expected days of Monday-Friday
TRAVEL.
- Travel is expected to various Iowa Select Farms facilities which may be local and out-of-area with little to no overnight travel through the utilization of a company provided vehicle.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual: Not Required
- Education/ Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science or a relatable field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in a safety management role. Preferably within the agriculture or livestock industry.
- Completion of OSHA 10 and 30- hour courses; certification on OSHA trainer is preferred.
- In depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, state and federal safety laws, and workers compensation regulations as they relate to swine production.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and motivate others.
- Excellent problem solving abilities and systemic approach to decision making.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with safety management software.
- Must possess a valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.
