Job Summary

Responsible for the physical processing of a variety of library materials to include but not limited to books, CDs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, etc.  Scans materials and generates book and spine labels, prepares processed books for distribution to appropriate libraries and provides daily relief coverage at the circulation desk.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the physical processing of books, CDs, cassettes and VHS tapes by: 1) Unloading and alphabetizing materials, and applying 3-M security tapes into book spines or throughout each book for protection of KS property; and 2) Affixing barcode labels on the top, left corner of each book, stamping each book in appropriate locations and inserting prepared title work slips into each book when available.
  • Shelving books to be cataloged on shelves by appropriate library by call numbers, fiction, paperback collection and Hawaiian collection for cataloging by appropriate librarians.
  • Upon completion of cataloging by librarian scans materials and generates book and spine labels for the Elementary Library by scanning each book barcode utilizing automated library system.
  • Upon revision of bibliographic data and printed labels by appropriate librarian for correct cataloging data, affixes computer generated labels for all campus libraries in appropriate locations on materials and prepares book jackets for books with title covers utilizing appropriate materials and affixing jackets to books.  Affixes book pockets or date due slips to inside front cover of each book to complete book processing procedures.
  • Prepares processed books for distribution to appropriate libraries by separating books into appropriate totes and working closely with Library Assistant to coordinate pick-up and delivery of books other KS school libraries.  Loads processed books onto book trucks for Head Librarian at the Reference Desk.
  • Provides daily relief coverage at the circulation desk by performing all check-in and check-out procedures using the circulation module of the library management system.  Assists all users to obtain requested library services in an appropriate manner.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in Library Services.
  • Good working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple functions and priorities in an efficient manner.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills needed to communicate clearly with student, parents, other school staff.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to establish relationships with students, parents and staff.
  • Ability to provide assistance in selecting appropriate library materials for students and staff.
  • Work independently, enforce rules, and resolve problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work with different age groups.
  • Ability to instruct students in the use of computer software/peripherals.
  • Knowledge of computerized library management systems, library terminology and routines.  And/or ability to learn and effectively use selected computer programs.
  • Be familiar with literature/enjoy reading and books.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.
