Assembly Operator I

Department: RFO (Rugged Fiber Optics)
Location: Arden, NC
Shift: 2nd Shift | 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
Pay Rate: $19.37/hour

Position Overview

The Assembly Operator I supports the production of high-quality rugged fiber optic products by performing detailed assembly, polishing, testing, and inspection tasks. This role requires strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to follow precise work instructions in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Polish, test, and inspect fiber optic cables and assemblies

  • Assemble, terminate, and package single- and multi-fiber cable components

  • Perform work according to drawings, work instructions, and quality standards

  • Conduct operational tests as required for specific processes

  • Measure components using calipers, gauges, and other measuring devices

  • Inspect finished products to print specifications

  • Complete required documentation to ensure product traceability

  • Identify and recognize common fiber optic connectors

  • Apply proper cleaning methods and assess contamination in optical assemblies

  • Troubleshoot basic issues and perform minor equipment adjustments as needed

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area

  • Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and quality requirements

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production needs

Transferable Skills Considered

Candidates without direct fiber optic experience may still qualify if they demonstrate strong transferable skills, such as:

  • Experience assembling small, intricate components by hand (electronics, circuit boards, medical devices, precision assemblies, etc.)

  • Clean room or controlled-environment manufacturing experience (preferred)

  • Hobbies requiring fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and attention to detail (e.g., sewing, fly tying, artistic or craft work)

  • Mechanical aptitude gained through hands-on work such as automotive repair, machinery maintenance, or electronics troubleshooting

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)

  • Minimum of 1 year of manufacturing experience (preferred)

  • Fiber optic cable manufacturing experience (preferred)

  • Familiarity with SAP Manufacturing systems and ISO 9001 standards (preferred)

  • Ability to use hand tools and read basic blueprints or drawings

  • Basic computer skills

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work collaboratively

  • Willingness to work overtime as production demands require

Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position approximately 75% of the time

  • Ability to operate machinery and move between work zones

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions in English
