Title: Automation Engineer
Location: Clayton, NC
Schedule: Monday - Friday 9am-5pm (expect OT as the project progresses)
PURPOSE:
- Work with business stakeholders and/or project team and vendors to ensure process control systems for existing and/or new equipment and processes are in alignment with local and global standards.
- Work with equipment vendors to spec equipment IFA's and requirements ensuring the equipment is ability to connect to and be used in local manufacturing meeting all requirements through people & equipment focus, as well as serving as gatekeeper for standards.
- Support plans to maintain & improve process control systems
- Schedule & execute plans in coordination with manufacturing schedules
- Operate as automation resource on projects that involve process control systems
- Own self-development & initiative to understand the site process control systems
- Adhere to the automation standards & implement the necessary changes to the automation-related specifications & maintenance plans
- Support audits & inspections for process control systems
- Utilize the appropriate cLEAN? tools within the main areas of Systematic Problem Solving, process improvement, & project management
- Operate within compliance with a Quality Mindset that focuses on risk management & mitigation
- Implement effective change management
- Support Corporate, PS, local IT, & local stakeholder initiatives & projects
- Participate in the development of new SOPs, best practices, and maintenance procedures
- Follow all safety & environmental requirements in the performance of duties
- Other accountabilities, as assigned
- Ability to work in an open office environment with the possibility of frequent distraction.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field of study from an accredited university required: May consider an Associate's degree in engineering or related field from an accredited university with a minimum of five (5) years of engineering experience in process-based manufacturing, utility, &/or packaging systems required
- May consider a High School Degree/GED with a minimum of seven (7) years of engineering experience in process-based manufacturing, utility, &/or packaging systems required
- Minimum of three (3) years engineering experience in process-based manufacturing, utility, &/or packaging systems required
- For Logistics roles only: Warehouse automation equipment a plus (Automated storage and Retrieval Systems, Automated Guided vehicles, Autonomous Mobile Robots, and Conveyor systems)
- Knowledgeable in the following technologies: SAP EM, PLC, DCS/SCADA, MES, Oracle, MS SQL (databases), Historian, general controls a plus SAP EWM a plus
- Proven expertise in planning/organization/execution of engineering activities a plus
- Ability to follow-up on results & revising the work plan for moderately complex problems being resolved by cross functional teams a plus
- Ability to translate high level direction into actionable tasks that deliver results using cLEAN? / Six Sigma methodologies a plus
- Year of experience: 5-7 years
PLC Programming:
- Expertise in programming and debugging PLCs (e.g., Siemens S7-1500 preferred) used in warehouse automation systems.
- Working knowledge of commercial or custom WCS platforms like Dematic iQ, Honeywell Intelligrated Momentum, Swisslog SynQ, or proprietary/custom systems.
- Deep understanding of how WCS bridges warehouse management systems (WMS, such as SAP EWM) with physical warehouse automation (PLCs, SCADA, robots, conveyors, etc.).
Analyzing bottlenecks or inefficiencies in the WCS system, such as delays in routing, misaligned processes between WCS and WMS/automation layers. - Debugging task execution problems sent from EWM to the WCS or automation systems, ensuring proper routing of warehouse orders to equipment.
- End-to-end experience with testing and commissioning Siemens PLC automation projects in a live warehouse environment tied to SAP EWM or another WMS.
- Experience mapping or translating logical warehouse tasks (from WMS/EWM) into real-time equipment-level commands executed through the WCS.
- Experience integrating SAP EWM or another WMS with automated warehouse technologies, such as robotics, AS/RS systems, sorters, palletizers, and conveyor systems.
- Experience integrating automation systems with IT infrastructure, including Active Directory and cybersecurity best practices.
- Skilled in integrating AMRs into warehouse automation systems, enabling real-time communication with WMS/WCS
- Familiarity with automation systems in regulated environments and understanding of GxP compliance, particularly Good Automated Manufacturing Practices (GAMP)
