PTS is looking to partner with an independent contractor as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor/Home and School Visitor In Pottstown, PA. The counselor is a vital member of the pupil services support services team, responsible for providing comprehensive prevention, intervention, and support services to students struggling with substance use and co-occurring issues. This contractor role involves delivering individual and group counseling, implementing evidence-based curricula such as Seeking Safety, collaborating with the Student Assistance Program (SAP) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) teams, providing proactive classroom instruction, and facilitating the InDepth vaping cessation program. Additionally, as a Home and School Visitor, this role will focus on addressing barriers to student attendance and success by fostering strong home-school connections and advocating for student well-being. The Counselor will work to create a safe and supportive school environment that promotes student well-being and academic success.
Hours: Full-time position Monday-Friday 7:23 AM-2:53 PM
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Counseling and Intervention:
? Individual Counseling: Provide confidential, individual counseling to students identified as at-risk for or experiencing substance use issues. Conduct comprehensive assessments, develop individualized treatment plans, and provide ongoing support to help students achieve their goals.
? Group Counseling: Facilitate evidence-based group counseling sessions, primarily utilizing the Seeking Safety curriculum, to address substance use, trauma, and related mental health concerns. Implement other research-based group interventions as appropriate.
? Curriculum Implementation: Deliver the Seeking Safety or other similar curriculum with fidelity, ensuring adherence to its core principles and activities. Adapt and tailor the curriculum to meet the specific needs of high school students.
? Classroom Instruction: Develop and deliver engaging and informative classroom presentations and workshops on topics related to substance use prevention, healthy decision-making, stress management, and other relevant social-emotional learning skills. Push into classrooms across grade levels to provide universal prevention and early intervention strategies.
? Vaping Cessation Program: Facilitate the InDepth vaping cessation program for students who have violated school vaping policies. Provide education, support, and coping strategies to help students quit vaping and understand the associated health risks. Student and Family Support (Home and School Visitor Focus):
? SAP and MTSS Collaboration: Actively participate as a member of the school's Student Assistance Program (SAP) team, contributing to the identification, referral, and support of students facing barriers to learning, including substance use. Collaborate with the MTSS team to integrate substance use prevention and intervention strategies within a multi-tiered framework of support. Support with education and awareness of the community and guardians to increase referrals to SAP services and decrease the number of students not connected to these services given unsigned permissions.
? Attendance Intervention: Identify and address the root causes of chronic absenteeism and truancy, including home visits as needed, to develop strategies for improving student attendance.
? Home-School Liaison: Serve as a primary link between the home and school, establishing effective communication channels to support student academic and social-emotional success.
? Family Engagement: Facilitate guardian involvement in their child's education and address family-related issues that may impact student learning and well-being. Provide resources and support to families.
? Resource Navigation: Connect students and families with school-based and community resources to address academic, social, emotional, health, and economic needs that impact school performance. ? Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting: Adhere to all mandated reporting requirements for suspected child abuse or neglect, working collaboratively with Child Protective Services and school administration.
? Crisis Intervention: Respond to and manage crisis situations involving students who may be under the influence, experiencing withdrawal, or facing other substance-related emergencies, following school protocols and procedures. Also respond to crises impacting student attendance or well-being in the home or school environment.
? Parent/Guardian Consultation: Communicate and collaborate with parents or guardians, with appropriate consent, to provide support, education, and resources related to their child's substance use and mental health, and to address attendance or behavioral concerns.
? Home Visits: Conduct home visits to support student engagement and eliminate attendance concerns and issues. Program Development and Collaboration:
? Peer Mentoring and Awareness Programs: Support ongoing Peer Mentoring and awareness programs (e.g., Avedium, Role Models for Change) to develop peer leaders in the building to enhance education and awareness to combat drug and alcohol use.
? Staff and Community Training: Provide and deliver staff and community training on the topic of drug and alcohol prevention and awareness, as well as on topics related to student attendance, family engagement, and community resources.
? Assessment and Referral: Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate students' substance use patterns, mental health concerns, overall well-being, and barriers to school success. Provide appropriate referrals to internal and external resources, including mental health professionals, substance abuse treatment centers, and community support services.
? Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including assessment results, treatment plans, progress notes, home visit logs, and other relevant documentation, in compliance with school policies and legal requirements.
? Professional Development: Stay current with the latest research, best practices, and legal updates in the fields of substance abuse counseling, adolescent development, school-based interventions, and Home and School Visitor practices. Participate in ongoing professional development activities.
? Collaboration and Communication: Work collaboratively with school administrators, teachers, counselors, nurses, and other staff members to create a comprehensive and integrated system of support for students. Maintain open and effective communication with all stakeholders.
? Advocacy: Advocate for the needs of students struggling with substance use and those facing barriers to school success, promoting a school culture that is supportive and understanding. Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Pupil Services.
Qualifications:
? Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or a related field.
? Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Home and School Visitor (PDE) certification is preferred.
? Licensure or certification as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or equivalent as required by state regulations is highly desirable.
? Demonstrated experience providing individual and group counseling to adolescents.
? Experience implementing evidence-based curricula, preferably Seeking Safety. ? Knowledge of adolescent development, substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and trauma-informed care principles.
? Familiarity and training in the Student Assistance Program (SAP).
? Experience developing and delivering classroom-based prevention and support programs.
? Experience facilitating vaping cessation programs is highly desirable.
? Experience working in public schools, with a strong understanding of school policies and procedures.
? Strong assessment, clinical, and crisis intervention skills.
? Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, particularly in engaging with families and community agencies.
? Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical and legal standards, including those related to student records and mandated reporting.
? Proficiency in record-keeping and documentation
