Job Title: Histology Specialist – Research & Assay Development
Location: Gaithersburg, MD
Industry: Biopharma / Research & Development
Employment Type: long-term contract (April 2026-potential for renewal)
Pay: $45/hr-$48/hr
Shift: First shift, M-F
A leading biopharmaceutical research organization is seeking a Histology Specialist to join its collaborative and fast-paced team. This role supports assay development, tissue sample processing, and regulatory-compliant laboratory practices contributing to the advancement of drug discovery and development.
Key Responsibilities: Histology Services-
Perform routine and advanced histological techniques including embedding, sectioning (microtomy), and staining of tissue samples

Conduct grossing procedures and automated immunohistochemistry (IHC)

Support the design, optimization, and validation of assays using IHC and in situ hybridization (ISH) techniques

Analyze, interpret, and document assay results with scientific accuracy

Manage and track research, pre-clinical, and clinical human tissue samples in compliance with Human Biological Sample (HBS) guidelines

Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and software systems related to histology sample preparation

Ensure instruments are maintained in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards

Maintain training and operations under GLP for toxicology studies and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) for clinical trials

Adhere to all applicable regulatory and quality control standards

Record detailed observations, analyze data, and communicate findings clearly

Maintain accurate documentation including technical summaries, protocols, and electronic lab notebooks

Prepare samples for shipment and regulatory submission

Assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and patent applications

Share relevant external publications with internal stakeholders

Foster strong internal relationships across departments

Uphold high standards of safety, compliance, and professional integrity

Adhere to Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) protocols and company code of conduct
- Experience in histology, including microtomy and staining techniques
- Experience with laser microdissection, qupath
-
Hands-on experience with IHC and ISH assay development

Familiarity with GLP and GCLP standards

Strong documentation, data analysis, and communication skills

Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced R&D environment
