Laboratory Technician

Pay: $18.25/hour


Overview

This client is an international Analytical Laboratory and is committed to global food health and safety through the analytical testing services they offer to their clients.
 

Schedule: Mon-Fri Day shift


Responsibilities:

  • Performs accountabilities as Laboratory Technician as per documented methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
This includes but is not limited to:
  1. Preparation of Microbiological media and reagents.
  2. Preparation and plating of Microbiological samples for routine testing.
  3. Reagent and solvent preparation.
  4. Performs routine DNA extraction for GMO testing as per approved methodology. Evaluates and consults with supervisor to determine appropriate methodology for non-routine samples.
  5. Washes and cleans the glassware and equipment between uses and keeps the work areas neat and clean to avoid cross contamination
  6. Schedules activities to provide an accurate and timely service to support business requirements.
  7. Enters data into the LIMS system for the tests performed and is responsible for the results.
  8. Remains informed of hazards associated with chemicals, equipment, and their use in a laboratory setting. Works in a safe manner, using appropriate safeguards and personal protective equipment, to prevent injury to self and co-workers. Reports all accidents or unsafe working conditions to the safety committee or management.
  • Performs sample login for Bioanalytical test samples. Generates a unique sample ID number(s) in the login system(s) following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software - verifies generated system information against clients' sample submission forms, and other information for accuracy and consistency.
  • Proposes troubleshooting for issues with sample/ media preparation, extraction procedures, and sample log-in procedures and coordinates with supervisor on resolutions.
  • Maintains and calibrates general laboratory equipment and instrumentation associated with daily work activities. Indicates when maintenance has been performed in logbooks as needed. Troubleshoots equipment problems and performs minor repairs; notifies supervisor of issues that require external repair.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of laboratory operations by proposing and implementing changes for improving quality, increasing method performance, reducing cost, or shortening process time.
  • Cross-trains and supports DNA Sample Prep department following documented methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This includes but is not limited to: Sample Preparation for DNA and Allergen analyses. Archival of test samples for DNA/ Allergen testing.
  • Cross-trains and supports other departments as needed, including Sample Receiving and the Chemistry Laboratory Assistant following documented methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree (A.S.) in Microbiology, Biology, or Molecular Biology, or related science from a college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Microbiology, Biology, or Molecular Biology, or related science from a four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Experience with Food and Plant microbiological analyses and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of other relevant technologies and markets
  • Familiar with the laboratory business environment
  • Experience working in international businesses
