MEI was launched in 2020 to analyze economic trends through the lens of the consumer to deliver tailored and actionable insights on economic issues for customers, partners and policymakers
The Institute is composed of a team of economists and data scientists that utilize & synthesize the anonymized and aggregated data from the Mastercard network together with public data to bring powerful insights to life, in the form of 1:1 presentation, global thought leadership, media participation, and commercial work through the company's product suites

About the Role
Mastercard's Economics Institute is seeking a talented Economic Analyst with R Programmer skills to join our Global Growth and Operations team. Reporting to the Director, Growth and Operations, this individual will blend advanced economic research with strong programming and data visualization skills.
This is a unique opportunity for someone passionate about applying economic thinking and technical expertise to real-world questions at the intersection of economics, retail, and commerce. The role involves working on large-scale data analytics, developing innovative economic insights, and building compelling visualizations that help communicate these insights to diverse audiences.
• Support client and stakeholder engagements across MEI
• Collaborate with team economists, econometricians, developers, visualization experts and industry partners.
• Develop and test hypotheses at the intersection of economics, retail, and commerce.
• Structure work and manage small project streams, delivering impactful results.
• Identify creative analyses and develop proprietary diagnostic indices using large and complex datasets, including macroeconomic and big data sources.
• Generate insights, synthesize analyses into impactful storylines and interactive visuals, and help write reports and client presentations.
• Enhance existing products and partner with internal stakeholders to develop new economic solutions.
• Help create thought leadership and intellectual capital.
• Create and format analytical content using R Markdown and/or Quarto.
• Work with databases and data platforms, including SQL and Hadoop.
• Write clear, well-documented code that others can understand and maintain.
• Collaborate using Git for version control.

All About You
• Bachelor's degree in economics (preferred), Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Two plus years of experience in economic analysis, data science, or a related field.
• Proficient in R and the RStudio IDE, with experience in packages like dplyr for data cleaning, transformation, and aggregation.
• Skilled in creating data visualizations that effectively communicate complex economic insights.
• Familiar with dependency management and documentation in R (e.g., roxygen2).
• Comfortable working with relational databases and writing SQL queries.
• Experience using data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
• Knowledge of JavaScript and modern front-end technologies for advanced visualizations is a plus.
• Proficiency in econometric and statistical techniques, including predictive modeling, logistic regression, survival analysis, time series modeling, design of experiments, decision trees, and data mining methods, is desirable.
• Strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Organized and able to prioritize work across multiple projects.
• Collaborative team player who can also work independently.
• Passionate about data, technology, and creating impactful economic insights.
