General Summary of Position
The Nurse Retentionist plays a key role in the MedStar Nursing Career Hub designed to provide direct care nurses with personalized career coaching wellbeing support mentorship professional development resources and structured development opportunities. This role collaborates with Nursing Leadership Human Resources Talent Acquisition Wellbeing Specialists and Nursing Professional Development to implement systemwide engagement and retention strategies aligned with strategic nursing goals. The Nurse Retentionist delivers individualized support through the Career Hub tracks KPIs develops dashboards and reports and contributes to scaling programs that reduce turnover improve engagement and strengthen nurses' sense of belonging and career clarity.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as a nursing retention and engagement expert by conducting engagement rounding focus groups listening sessions and/or other methods to identify workforce challenges and opportunities and communicate actionable insights to leadership.
- Provides individualized coaching and professional development guidance; recognizes wellbeing needs and connects nurses to appropriate internal resources including the Wellbeing Specialists and EAP
- Supports career planning and professional advancement by facilitating structured shadowing opportunities for specialty exploration and shared governance participation for nurses who have completed residency or have six or more months of unit experience.
- Promotes and counsels nursing associates on the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP) & Clinical Ladder Programs. Collaborates with Nursing Professional Development Specialists to support achievement and career progression.
- Builds and maintains mentorship program infrastructure by identifying needs recruiting and matching mentors and mentees and evaluating program outcomes in partnership with the Nurse Residency Program Coordinator and other nursing leaders.
- Facilitates early-fit and re-home pathways for new or experienced nurses including specialty exploration and shadowing opportunities to ensure optimal role placement.
- Consults with leaders and departments in and outside of Nursing on retention strategies workforce engagement and innovative staffing pathways (PRN float pool job share flexible roles) that meet evolving workforce needs.
- Leads and supports recognition and engagement programs that strengthen professional identity and belonging.
- Manages and supports nursing workforce development programs that promote successful transition to practice and long-term retention.
- Partners with Nursing Residency Program Coordinators Wellbeing Specialists Magnet Program Coordinators and Magnet Champions to align retention initiatives with wellbeing strategies professional nursing practice standards and Magnet principles.
- Tracks analyzes and reports nursing workforce trends-including retention turnover vacancy and program outcomes-to inform strategy and support continuous improvement across the organization.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
- Master's degree preferred
Experience
- 3-4 years Inpatient nursing experience required
- 1-2 years Demonstrated experience in coaching mentoring program management residency support or workforce development required
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Upon Hire required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication coaching facilitation and relationship-building skills
- Ability to collaborate with Talent Acquisition HR Nursing Professional Development Wellbeing and leaders across the system

USD $102,606.00 - USD $196,996.00 /Yr.
