General Summary of Position

The Inpatient Pharmacy at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is hiring a Lead Pharmacy Technician. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Lead Pharmacy Technician provides advanced technical support and leadership in the pharmacy including workflow management, process development and oversight, training and validation, and project management. The Lead may oversee the operation of the IV room, provide direct supervision to pharmacy technicians, manage day-to-day technician operations, and manage scheduling for all pharmacy technicians within the department. 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to staffing and service needs within the Pharmacy department. Must be able to perform all duties of Pharmacy Technician III and Specialty Pharmacy Technicians with progression.
  • Abides by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles including look alike sound alike and high alert drugs. 
  • Adheres to all laws, regulations and hospital policies regarding the management and handling of recalled, discontinued unused expired or returned medications. 
  • Orients, mentors, and trains Pharmacy Technicians. Assists in development, validation and evaluation of performance standards and competencies. Identifies educational requirements and training needs; assist in developing educational programs and materials to meet needs. 
  • Ensures that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital according to policies and procedures including those addressing non-formulary medications outages emergency and disaster situations and if applicable the 340B Drug Pricing Program. 
  • Participates in the evaluation of the hospital's medication management system for risk points and identifies areas to improve safety and security. 
  • Supports pharmacy operations by completing primary dispensing tasks as necessary to fill shortages and vacancies within the department.
  • IV Room Oversight: Completing all fingertip and media fill testing for pharmacy employees; Monitors Simplifi 797 and USP 800 for tasks and completion and helps pharmacy team coordinator adjust IV room tasks to best fit workflow Remains up to date on current USP sterile compounding guidelines and requirements. 
  • Preparation: Assists with the filling of medication orders under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. 
  • Transports: Delivers medications to the appropriate area of the hospital. 
  • Restock: Restocks and orders pharmaceutical supplies within the hospital. 
  • Technical: Supports work of the department by performing clerical and secretarial tasks. 
  • Development: Maintains current knowledge certification and licensure. 
  • Performs regular assessments and audits.

Minimal Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required 
  • Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program required 
  • AA/BS or some college credits in Natural or Physical sciences and/or Business Management preferred
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience

Experience

  • 5-7 years Hospital Pharmacy Technician Experience required 
  • 3-4 years IV Admixture and Pharmacy Automation Experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • PHRMTECH-R - Registered Pharmacy Technician through the DC Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
  • CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) National Pharmacy Technician Certification through Board of Pharmacy approved program required upon hire

This position has a hiring range of

USD $25.86 - USD $46.12 /Hr.
