General Summary of Position
The Staff Clinical Ethicist is a staff member of the John J. Lynch MD Center for Ethics (the Center) sharing responsibility for the Center's Clinical Ethics Consultation Service ethics education programming and scholarship policy work and organizational ethics projects. They provide support and ethical guidance to various units committees and departments within Medstar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) Medstar Health and other organizations locally and nationally with approval. The Staff Clinical Ethicist coordinates closely with all other members of the Center on all Center functions and reports to the Director of the Center.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Serves as a member of the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service which provides 24 hr/365 day consultation in clinical ethics for patients and families attending and resident physicians APPs nurses social workers administrators and others. Fulfills assigned call duties including 24hr availability on some weekdays weekends and holidays. Implements coordinates and organizes the Clinical Ethics Consultation service and provides direct ethics consultation services including analysis of relevant ethical considerations skilled and sensitive communication with stakeholders and clear and timely documentation of consultation procedures and ethics guidance. These services often require physical presence in patient care areas and necessitate adherence to applicable training and safety requirements. Provides ongoing ethics support to the other MedStar hospitals including potential consultations and education at the discretion of the Director of the Center. This may include virtual consultations and on-site activities.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in and outside the Center to review and assist in development revision implementation and maintenance of policies related to clinical and organizational areas requiring ethical guidance or oversight. Provides ethical guidance to committees / work groups as needed within MWHC and beyond.
  • Promotes medical ethics awareness and education by providing ongoing and ad hoc ethics education programming to MedStar clinicians and administrators serving as an Ethics representative on relevant hospital committees joining select clinical rounds and building and maintaining liaison relationships with key hospital stakeholders. Contributes to the education and training of Center trainees including residents fellows and volunteers and assists with the training and orientation of new Center staff.
  • Contributes to the advancement of clinical ethics and strengthens Medstar Health's reputation as a leader in the field through scholarship participation in conferences and symposia and approved collaborations with community organizations non-profits and academic institutions. Organizes coordinates and implements research projects relevant to the work of the Center and contributes to scholarship and other publications emanating from the Center.
  • Contributes to performance improvement and peer review initiatives to maintain and improve high quality clinical ethics consultation services and assist MWHC and MedStar Health in adhering to the highest standards of medical ethics.
  • Serves as a working member of MWHC's Ethics Committee and its subcommittees. Collaborates closely with other members of the Center to fulfill the mission and work of the Center. As needed will assist in the administrative duties of the Center and assigned committees.
  • Operates as a member of the Center and under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of the Center. Participates in Center staff meetings training and other group activities and projects.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Master's degree in Philosophy Bioethics Theology Public Health Social Work Nursing or other relevant discipline required
    • Doctoral degree in Philosophy Bioethics Theology Law Medicine Social Work Nursing or other relevant discipline preferred
    • Successful completion of a fellowship in clinical ethics preferred
    Experience
    • 1-2 years of progressively more responsible job related experience required
    • Previous clinical ethics consultation experience preferred

    USD $90,875.00 - USD $157,352.00 /Yr.
